Morning chaps,

Got my Cervelo R2 last May, which came with full 105. I have gradually upgraded to Ultegra, and noticed since I changed the rear mech that under heavy load im getting a weird ticking noise.

Has anyone had this, as a result of changing the rear mech?

Not sure if its worth going back to the shop for. Its just a bit irritating whilst doing any efforts.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Which gears does it do it in? Is it accross the cassette or more in lower or higher gears? If your deraillieur is misaligned to the front chain rings i.e if you are cross chaining alot then it can be the teeth of the jockey wheels not picking up the chain correctly on its return. It could also be if it is not moving freely on the hanger.

Also, are you 100% sure it is coming from the rear and not possibly the BB or the front chainring? Plently of clicks and ticks can come from somewhere different to where you expect.

    Thanks for that.

All the gears I think. I did read earlier about the hanger, so will check that. I'm fairly sure its not from anywhere else, but I agree its not impossible.

    incorrectly routed chain.

That would click all the time. If you mean the chain not running through the cage properly and if you try to back pedal the chain just catches and falls off.

Falling off would usually point to the mech being very out of line but if that were the case youd have all manner of shifting problems.
When you say you changed the mech have you made sure theres enough space from the jockey wheel to the cassette? If its too close it would click in almost every gear. Worth checking an if so wind the B tension screw in to give it some more clearance.

    Check the jockey wheels.
My training bike developed a ticking noise when using the smallest sprockets on the cassette. At first i thought it was the cassette and or chain, but having replaced both the noise persisted. Ended up asking the LBS to take a look and they pinpointed it to the jockey wheels both being worn. Changed these and the problem was solved.
  • Have you tried re indexing the gears?

As mentioned, this has happened since the mech was first put on from new.

Not yet no, I am going to have a tinker and see if I can get to the bottom of it.

Checked the mech hanger last night to find that the 2 small allen bolts weren't tight enough, hence the side play. Hopefully should be ok for next ride. Will report back.

No, but all upgrades were done around the same time.
