Majorca Cala D'or

Hello,

I have had a good search around and found some answers to a few of my questions but not all.

I'm off to Majorca in April and my girlfriend has booked to stay in Cala D'or...which I believe to be rather flat. My normal rides are circa 2/3K of climbing so this will be a change. On some days I probably will cycle up to the North coast and do some of the more famous hills but I wondered are there any good 100/150km rides from there with decent ascent or failing that a peleton that runs from Cala D'or to give me a tow into the hills.

Thanks,
Adam

Compared to the mountains of the North Cala d'Or is pretty flat, but that's not to say that it's pancake flat, far from it. Even the ride up to Felanitx is a decent climb away from the coast, then right there you've got San Salvador monastery (https://www.strava.com/activities/301483196) which is like a mini col in it's own right, only short but certainly testing. Around the corner there's the less testing but still still Castell de Santeuri (https://www.strava.com/activities/304209194) These are all short of course, the rest is undulating rather than hill or entirely flat.

But if you're planning a trip up North then there's enough to keep you busy around Cala d'Or the rest of the time. Keep in mind that it's about 40 miles from Cala d'Or to the base of the mountains, so 80 mile round trip just to get to the hills. Personally I put my bike in the car and drove there!
  • Sounds good, I would like to visit the mountains but because I'm 24 car hire seems to be rather pricey, I don't suppose you know what public transport is like?

    Thanks very much!

You can get busses from Cala d'Or but AFAIK they are mostly concerned with taking people to the other beaches along the coast, and not really with bikes either. I don't have much knowledge of them as I've always had a car there.

The Canyon Base bike hire place at Cala Serena I think does some organised rides, not sure where.

You can hire cars in Cala d'Or - Roig seems to be popular, so perhaps you could hire for 24 hours which wouldn't be too pricey then you can get a day in the mountains.

As well as San Salvador (Monastary and café) and Castell de Santeuri (shut Castle and last time I was there a man having a dump in the middle of the car park) there is also Randa and Monti-sion.
You can link them all together for one ride that would include a fair bit of climbing.

If you were going to do 150km then you could ride to Inca then Lloseta, Alaro, Orient and Bunyola then back via Santa Marie. The mountain section is one of my favourites a lot quieter in terms of both cars and cyclists than Lluc, Calobra, Soller routes.

There's also a small climb just outside Bonany/Petra which I when up for the first time last year. The link below gives a circular route that also takes in Cura and San Salvador and starts in Felanitx and is 110km long so about 130km round trip from Cala D'or

With regards to public transport you can take your bike on a train (outside peak hours, these they ARE NOT 7-9 am 4-6pm it's more like 1-3pm look for the bike symbol with a line though it on the time table). A line runs from Manacor to Inca. You could then ride up to LLuc and then possibly Sa Colbra and back down the same way or through the mountains to Soller and ride back.

No problems, Cala d'Or is kind of my home away from home holiday destination, as much as I have one. Been there five times now, so would be good to hear your experiences when you get back.
