S-Works Venge ( updated cracked frame page3)

Ever since I built up my Venge the Di2 junction box really bugged me, it seemed to clutter the front end.
So after many nights searching the net for answers I finally took the plunger, or should I say the drill.
Started with this,
Then this,
Then,
Ended up with this, it also has the added advantage of a full length rear brake outer which gives a much better lever feel.
If any one is interested I can do a how to in the workshop section.Building:

Nice and tidy with the DI2 junction box. How do you access the charge port and see the LED for charge state? I'm assuming you need to drop the bars or have I missed something in your design?Rose Xeon CDX 3100, Ultegra Di2 disc (nice weather)
Ribble Gran Fondo, Campagnolo Centaur (winter bike)
Van Raam 'O' Pair
Land Rover (really nasty weather )0 -

If you have the EWW-WU101 sender, then you can see the battery level in % on your Garmin.
And the battery should last at least a month, so no biggie.
I'm surprised the health and safety crew aren't already here frothing at the mouth that a handlebar has a non-original hole in it, but given where it is, I reckon it'll be fine.0 -

I wouldn't ride it, that hole would keep popping into my head when I was descending quickly. It does look tidy though!0 -

Bernie, you use a chainsaw to cut a steerer tube, i doubt a 6mm hole in the handle bar clamping area is going bother you too much!
Got to wonder when 3T will have this modification in their next run of handlebars... or not!0 -
Very neat! Considering the bars have 2 larger cable exit holes already, I'd have thought the alloy would be thick enough in the centre section to survive this treatment?
(I might be popping the faceplate off and taking a precautionary peek at it every now and then though...)0 -

Yep, nothing like a chainsaw when you're in a rush......
Now that the new Di2 9150 is about to come out with the junction box in the bar end, this kind of mod is sort of redundant now, but if you're sticking with 9070 then worth a try.
But to be properly 9150 compatible, any new handlebar now has to have a hole at the bottom underside of the drop to allow the cables to pass outside (or a clear and easy route inside). Funnily enough, there's a video about that...! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvNFnoyD9JM0 -

Wheels are great they bought as a stop gap, and never been replaced 8000km since May and no problems, run true and straight, and bearings are silky smooth.Building:

If i thought there would have an issue drilling I wouldn't have done it.
There would be more chance of the bars snapping due to over tightening, and plus the cable exit holes are more than likely to go first.
Drilling bars isn't new.

Good to hear, thinking of getting some - those are the 55mm right?0 -

Nah - well thought out and cleverly made that be - no problem at all with doing that with Ali bars. Carbon I'd say no, but Ali that's fine.
Top work that man.Postby team47b » Sun Jun 28, 2015 11:53 am

Yes, 55mm highly recommended, I don't think I would ever notice the difference between these and high end wheels.
At £500 a pair a lot cheaper to replace and not to expensive that they only get used on super nice days.Building:

Cool. I'm looking at an Allez Sprint with those as a budget-ish aero race bike for next year, seems like it should fit the bill (£1,870 for the both and 0% deals readily available).0

Little update.
Steerer now cut down, new saddle Brooks C13 and a trial of some gums wall's, which I am sure will divide opinion.

Thought I would update this thread, after returning from 2 weeks cycling in France last summer whilst cleaning the bike down I found a crack in the frame. This would explaine the creeks whilst out of the saddle climbing. Not really what you want to see after you have climbed and descended the Tourmalet.

I took the frame to Chester Concept Store, and they were fantastic, bear in mind I didn't even purchase it from them, a few pictures were take and sent to specialized. Specialzed requested the frame for further inspection 2 weeks later I got the call to say a new frame was benign dispatched. Nice service from specialized but my mates cracked two s works bikes now. I think they are playing right on the edges of weight and durability.0
-
I’d rather have a robust frame rather than save 300grams which is the real world difference between the S works and Specialized’s next frame down .
Each to their own as I can understand the appeal of the s works brand
Great service from Specialized though but that’s part of the premium you pay for buying into the brand.“Give a man a fish and feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime. Teach a man to cycle and he will realize fishing is stupid and boring”

Crikey; well spotted!
As a rider of one of the ubiquitous CR1-SLs I suppose I should give it a close peering at occasionally...0 -
