Giant RideSense magnets

Morning all.

Does anyone know of a tidier solution for mounting a magnet on the crank arm to use with the RideSense for cadence?

Having a search reveals lots of people talking about nice little magnets that fit on the pedal spindle, but this won't line up with the RideSense.

Below shows my current set up, the flash has made the electrical tape more noticeable, but even in normal light the whole set up's a bit of an eyesore!

Any ideas?

  • I've been using a neodymium magnet on my pedal axle for cadence with a Garmin sensor and the gap between the 2 can be far larger than with standard magnets, so you may well find it will work.

Pm me and I can send you one if you want to try..

If it needs to line up with the sensor, why not glue a neodymium magnet onto the back of the crank arm with epoxy?

    ^^^ this

if you want a removable method, you can use insulating tape to hold the magnet (i do)

Thanks for the offer Gaz, but I'm not sure if that would work still? Do the magnets have different polarity or something so that the RideSense can differentiate between the two? When I use the bike on the turbo I use a magnet for speed on the rear wheel too, so wouldn't want one to interfere with the other.

What sort of glue are we talking? I can't see superglue type products holding for some reason... maybe I'm being paranoid. But yes, some sort of adhesive fixed magnet that you can't see from the outside is what in after.

I don't want to use electrical tape as I'm trying to move away from the bodged look!

    No

    As mentioned before - epoxy.

    Ok, so like Araldite?

Excuse my ignorance, but I don't think I've ever used an epoxy in my life!?

Double stick acrylic foam tape is what you need. http://www.autozone.com/sealants-glues- ... 17047_0_0/ and not to be confused with the white foam tape that is a royal pain to remove. Very strong, has a rubbery texture to it, comes off without much residue which can be easily cleaned off with white spirit, paraffin, etc., comes in different widths and can be easily trimmed. If you have to remove it just use a soft wood or plastic chisel of some sort to separate the magnet and roll off the remaining tape as if it were chewing gum. I used it to keep lead wheel weights in place on a 160mph road race motorbike. Never lost one and resists most nasty chemicals while in place. Can be found in most auto parts and home improvement stores.

Thought I'd update this with my new solution. I mentioned it in the bike shop the other week whilst I was having my bike fit done and I was given this...

I think he said it's a Bontrager cadence magnet, I had a quick nosey online but couldn't find it. I had to pop the magnet out that came with it as it wasn't strong enough. The one I've put in isn't seated quite as nicely, but I didn't want to chop it about too much as I didn't want to damage it without having a replacement!
Anyway, much happier with how it looks now, not invisible but to my eye it's not unsightly either, this is what I think the supplied set up should look like from Giant.

Why can't you just use a neodymium magnet on the pedal axle ? that would be almost invisible and all you'd need to do would be to move your sensor further along the chainstay and the magnet on your spoke ?

    What's stopping that ?

On the giant sensor the cadence part is about 2 cm into the stay, the visible part is for the speed sensor

You cant move it, its effectively built into the frame

I have one of these bontrager magnets... the rubber snapped after a week. It's now got a cable tie holding it on.

So much for a neater solution. Hope yours lasts longer.

look into sugru. could be used solely to cover/bond magnet on inside of crank arm.
