Mavic Ksyrium Freehub/Sticking Issue

Hi chaps/chapettes,
Got an old pair of ksyriums with a campag freehub - which the wheels run fine with, I got hold of a shimano replacement freehub and fitted it today but after fitting the freehub is very 'sticky'. i.e. when i grab the freehub and spin the wheel it only goes about 1 full revolution before stopping, there's obviously a lot more friction that there should be. There's no play and the freehub goes on and off fine... I've made sure not to over-tighten the axel, just nipped it up.
Any ideas? Is the freehub I've acquired knackered (or is the bearing likely knackered)? does it probably just need taking apart, cleaning and lubing? (wheels are fairly old and grimey) do I need to change the bearing pre-load etc?
Any thoughts would be handy, ta!

Are your wheels older than that with a 'unit' freehub, like Shimano? Those are full of ball bearings which are prone to rust and seizing up. You can pull it apart but be ready to catch all the bits that fall out; the balls will almost certainly need replacing and the races could be pitted. Or you can try injecting some light oil past the seal.0 -

Did you grease or oil the pawls and ratchet ? Very light oil is widely recommended on these rather than any form of grease.(.Even Shimano hydraulic mineral oil) Failing that you may have left out the washer that sits between the hub and free hub body ?0

Not quite so, this moniker applies to free hubs post 2012 that have 9mm bearing bore (for the 9mm axle introduced in 2013) , but come with an adpater sleeve to make them useable with the pre 2013 8mm axle also... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CROJ5sLk8-Y0 -
At OP, did you fit a washer to the axle, under the freehub ? Or in the case of a post 2012 freehub on a pre 2013 wheel, the one-piece sleevewasher in the above video instead of the plain washer. I'm wondering if you've mistakenly fitted BOTH which would almost certainly cause friction at the free hub, as the axle thread probably wouldn't bottom against the shoulder on the other half of the axle.0

To check whether this is the problem, you could fashion an additional shim of the same diameter cut (with scissors) from a coke can and assemble the freehub with both in place.
And, has been stated, lubricate with light oil, e.g. sewing machine oil, not grease.0 -

Hi, I had exactly the same problem as you: I bought a pack of three Mavic 8mm internal spacers (p/n 35127401).
...I've 2 left which are gathering dust, so if you want one pm me your address and I'll pop one in the post for you, for nowt.

Does it literally go next to the washer that sits inside the freehub?
I'll pm you now.0 -
Glad to be of help!0
