Repairing plain gauge spoke wheel with butted spoke?

I've got a wheel with a couple of broken spokes - can I replace these with butted spokes as I have them to hand? The original spokes are 2mm and the replacements are 1.8mm but if I equalise the absolute tension it should be fine? Thanks in advance, paranoia's a lovely thing.
