Bib Tights - Lifespan

Hi all,

I was hoping you could help me get to the bottom of my "bib tights issue". This winter I purchased my first pair of bib tights (Dhb Vaeon Roubaix Pro Padded Bib Tights). For the first few rides they were great, however after approximately 10 rides a small hole developed on the inside of the leg (which resulted in a nasty friction injury).

Wiggle as usual provided great service and refunded me. I went on to buy some Sportful Giro 2 bib tights, and on the third ride a hole developed, this time slightly lower on the inner thigh (other leg to previous hole).

I have checked my saddle for anything sharp, and cannot find anything that would cause a hole, have I just been unlucky?

Have you washed them with other garments with Velcro closures, such as gloves, overshoes, etc? They can wreak havoc with Lycra bibs.

Do you have a saddle bag with velcro closures?

    What saddle do you have?
I used to have a Charge Spoon but it ruined a couple of pairs of bibshorts due to the seams. So i would defo have a look at the saddle to see if it could be rubbing.
  • I haven't washed them with any velcro, and my saddle bag has a buckle based system.

I think this could be the cause, how can I stop this? I have muscular legs which touch at the top, based on this wouldn't any brand of bib tights rub against the saddle?

On a side note I've had a pair of altura bib shorts since summer, I've not had an issue with these.

My shorts/tights seems to fray a bit on the seam on the inside of my thigh from rubbing on the stitching on my Arione. Luckily no holes.

Are the buckles on the side of your saddle bag? If so, they could be catching on your inner thighs

I'm going with something catching on the saddle or seatpost. Sounds like more than just wear and tear.
  • Hi all,

    Apologies for the bump.

I have tried to do some further investigation while riding, and I think I have come the conclusion that the problem is the saddle bag. I have a small topeak aero saddle bag.

On the left side of the this saddle bag, there seems to be some sort of furry material that cannot be covered by anything (looks like it should be covered by velcro). Does anyone have any recommendations to avoid this?

To be honest there's lots to rub on there. Do you need a bag that size? I'd think it's more likely to be one of the plastic buckles.

Unless you're doing massive distances you can get by with a much smaller bag that doesn't need support from the seaport.

Thanks Fenix. Do you have any recommendations? I've had a look at both of the below. I have a pump that is attached to the frame so the main purpose of the saddle bag is to carry a spare inner tube and levers. Usually I carry my phone and food in the jersey.

I have the same saddle bag in medium but it doesn't rub or catch.

Try to move the seatpost strap up as far as you can. Use a small piece of non slip mesh mat to prevent it slipping. This will push the bag further back and should prevent catching your tights /shorts as you ride.

I have the micro caddy and its pretty good but if buying today, I would look at one of the ones that mounts properly on the saddle rails: http://www.lezyne.com/products-organizers.php#caddysqr

I use a Specialized saddle bag with a similar mounting design (seatpost plus rails), but which is slightly smaller.

That buckle on the seat post will be a problem (mine uses Velcro), and you need to get the seat post strap much higher up the post closer to the saddle.

Look for a Specialized Micro or Mini wedgie.

I have a set of bibs that have been going for years. (craft). I've owned several sets since but these remain my favourite. I suspect they'll be still going strong after the apocalypse.
