  • I would take it to your LBS to have it checked out.

I agree. Difficult to tell from the pictures.
Only way to be sure is to get it checked out.

How is a local bike shop qualified to diagnose frame failure? The last time I checked most don't non-destructive testing facilities (not that you'll necessarily tell even with NDT).

    3 options:

    ignore it
get someone to inspect it and repair it properly
    buy a new frame

Getting some spotty Herbert in the local bike shop, half your weight, with an interest in selling you a new bike to lean on it isn't going to tell you much!

As Dolan are in the UK would it be a crazy idea to it back to them to have a look rather than just take it to your LBS?

Send Dolan photos - or pop and see them - their customer service is great.

Spoken to Dolan this morning and sent some pics, so will see what they say. Did also contact a carbon repair place and they seemed to think that the lug was becoming unbonded

A carbon repair place is the way to go - Dolan probably better than lbs but not that much better. Bottom line is unless you can be 99% certain it is superficial you probably don't want to be riding it at any speed and only a specialist is going to have a chance of coming close to giving you an informed opinion.

  • Some places can take an xray of the frame, its expensive but you will get your answer.

I saw this another persons post

In my experience with carbon fibre from racing motorcycle components, if it is stressed suddenly beyond its elastic limits the resin (or paint) will show signs of cracking. It is very difficult to bend, twist or deform carbon beyond its limits without it showing external visible signs.

Dolan said the way that frame is made the seat-tube section has a male extension, and the seat stay a female, and are bonded together, with filler put around the junction and smoothed off. They seemed to think the crack was in the filler, so wasn't necessarily as bad as it looked.

Is a bad time to be needing a new frame right now, but would like a bit of confidence isn't going to part company on a 40mph descent.

There are some really knowledgeable mechanics out there...But, I see your point.

Rob Hayles does CF repair - if it needs it - he'd be my best bet. Ask him ?
