My right hand Athena 11s shifter has developed an issue. When changing up a gear on the smallest 4-5 sprockets (L-R) the thumb shifter seems to let go and changes 2/3/4 sprockets at once. It feels like the ratchet may have gone any thoughts?

Well that is not narmal you can buy individual shifter bodies as spares. Contact a good shoo chwaper than new shifters.

Malcolm, Welcome back and hope you are fully recovered ( or, at least, well on the way). Did that accident affect your typing finger?

  • I had exactly the same issue with my Athena shifters. The ratchet mechanism is knackered. I just bought new shifters. It will get worse and worse.

I'm not sure whether spares are available or they are viewed as consumables these days, but I couldn't be mithered to find out.

Just as a short term suggestion... I had the same problem with Veloce RH shifter (now replaced) that I kind of got around until replacement by applying a little pressure on the shifter paddle at the same time as pressing the button.

It sounds like the ratchet is worn. I had this on a LH Chorus shifter. I replaced the whole thing by buying a new set. GFK at Velotech will repair for you but it wont be cheap. By the time you send it, get it fixed you'll be into £40. It is possible to repair yourself but its quite fiddly to do and you will likely still need a new ratchet/spring.

Which in a different thread was supposed to be indestructible...

  • Bit of an exageration Ugo. Just pointing him in the direction of folk who can fix it. Mine are still fine - thanks for asking though.

It hasnt had much use and is still within the 3 year warranty period. Condor are sorting out. Indexing has never been easy on the lower half of the cassette. Unfortunately its on the winter bike which is now out of commission after ive just serviced it. I have 11s Record shifters from 2009 that are still fine.

One would hope the Chorus + series are better built inside than the lower plastic stuff. I have not opened a Mach 3 lever yet, so no idea

My youngest Ergo's are from 2005, only thing ever changed were G-springs.
I would never touch anything below Chorus of the later stuff, basically throw away stuff.
