Helmet mounted light

I'm looking for a helmet mounted light, preferably a white and red number.
Seen the Topeak example on the net but never seen one in the flesh. Are they a viable option? Liking the "all in one" aspect of the light.
Not bothered about frying fellow road users retinas, just something to make me noticed during the dark mornings as well as allowing me to see where I'm looking. Should be safer at junctions and roundabouts.

Any recommendations or alternative suggestions please?

I'm using Lezyne Macro Duo light on my helmet, I can adjust the angle and output of it for the dark lane I start the ride home on then turn it down and point it closer to the front wheel when I get to lit streets.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

If you are looking for quality over value then look no further than the Exposure Link. A little more expensive than alternatives but can still be had for £55 and will probably last longer than others.
  • I've been using the Light&Motion Vis360 for the last 5 years. It's not all-in-one like the Lezyne but is all connected. I like it.

I use an Exposure Joystick, with a Redeye Micro plugged into the rear Smartport. Works really well. They also do a brighter Redeye which clips on the back and, again, gets powered off the main light. Having a helmet light with no external batteries sells it for me.

Exposure also do a cheaper combo helmet light now, but run time is reportedly less than 3 hrs.

I wouldn't go super bright on the lid, unless you are off-road. Its too easy to blind people as you move your head around. All you really need is a perimeter flasher and some decent bar mounted lights.

A couple of XP-L or XM-L2 501bs or similar (£5-10 each and 200 - 1000 lumen depending on LED and mode)- bar mounted on medium or low setting is enough and wont blind anyone, add a pound shop blinker on the lid and you are sorted.

I don't get forward 'to see with' lights on helmets for road cycling. I've never met one coming the other way which hasn't been dazzling. It just seems a bit anti-social, with no actual benefit to the user. If anything it's actually a worse place to light the road from as you don't get shadowing of the surface having the light source so close to you eye. Plus when riding in mist, (but also fog, rain, or snow) a helmet light just lights up the mist meaning you can't see past it.

Fair enough, on a MTB, its almost compulsory, but then you're not facing oncoming traffic, and through twisty singletrack you often need to look ahead to obstacles that aren't yet in front of your bars. I'd still have the main light on the bars though to give good shadowing. But the benefit I feel outweighs the risks of having the light strapped to your lid.

Get two lights on your bars, two on the rear, and a small rubber rear blinky light for the helmet that will rip off in a crash to give for visibility above cars. I like the elastic band mounts on the road bike then I can twist the light around the bars to dip it in well lit areas.
  • A set if these will do you all winter. Mount then through vents on your lid. Perfect to give a bit of extra visibility but not blinding. Chuck them in your pocket/saddle bag for the summer as 'just in case' lights. Buy a new set next winter.
