GoPro HERO4 at night with light problem.

I've recently got a GoPro and a Hope R2i light.

When I use my cam with my light it records a terrible video, there is a small spot which is barely visible. I had some Chinese lights and they definitely don't perform like the Hope but they showed up better on the recording.

GoPro settings- 1080 S at 60fps. Most settings on auto.

The light is really fantastic but the video just doesn't pick it all up.

Any ideas welcome.

Might it be something to do with the frequency of the LED compared to the GoPro?

Has anyone had, and solved, this issue?

  • Edit: when I took a photo with the GoPro, it was also terrible. My iPhone camera picked it up great- really gives a good resemblance. Same with iPhone video.

You need to set Low Light Mode to ON.
The camera will then slow down the frame rate to capture as much light and detail as possible.

I only have a Hero 3+, do the later models not come with a low light setting?

Actually, it goes on about that in the bit about ISO settings.

Maybe try messing around with that.

GoPro's are rubbish with changes in light and varying light. I tried getting a night ride video with mine but gave up.

Try 30fps, that should help a little

  • Don't use a GoPro, but above advice about slowing down FPS and ISO adjustments.

Maybe an IR light might be what you are wanting?
  • My Tomtom bandit works easy at night, 1080p 30fps or 60fps, videos are spot on no issues

  • Got it!

    1080s

    30fps

    I have the protune on.

    White balance - 6500K

    Colour - flat

    ISO limit 6400

The image is very good. I can see objects in the shadows which I can't even see in real life. The image is a bit grainy but it is definitely watchable. For a night video it is really good.

Good to read you got it sorted and are getting decent results.

Anything above 30fps and the sensor just doesn't get enough light to capture a good image.

Now, show us the video!
