6700 shifter ratchet question

If it is actually the shifter that's knackered, consensus seems to be that Shimano shifters are not practically repairable, and that finding a working one on Ebay is the best bet. That's what I did when my LH triple shifter went tits-up; bagged a nearly new one for £25!
Worth checking first though that it's not the shift cable fraying inside the shifter. That's usually what's going on when my 105 5600 RH shifter starts playing up.0 -
Head to SJS Cycles and buy some brand new ones (I think they Sora or Tiagra but new style with hidden cables) for £50 - save messing about on eBay and buying more broken ones. That's what I did.
Then smash the broken ones with a hammer and throw them into next door's garden.Postby team47b » Sun Jun 28, 2015 11:53 am

First try spraying the internals with a solvent such as WD-40, White Spirit, Paraffin, etc. Sometimes it's just a case of being gummed up or having no lube left in the mechanism. Give it a good dousing and run the shifter through the gears. if using WD-40 try not to get any on the rubber covers and clean off any that might come in contact with them as it can degrade the rubber. If this works you'll want to add some more durable lube at some point and blow it out with an air hose, if possible, before adding the lube. Any type of penetrating, med. viscosity lube should work such as gear oil, some chain lubes, possibly the spray on greases, etc. I use Chain L No. 5 lube and has been working fine for over 5k miles so far.0

Don't throw them over next doors garden too hastily. Try bathing them in solvent. As someone who can successfully take old sora shifters apart and get the springs back together again I can tell you some of the springs that operate the ratchet pawls are very weak and any kind of thick grease or dirt can gum them up. The promising news is that yours sometimes slip, if the pawl was broken (common failure) it wouldn't attempt to shift at all. operate them in solvent, dry and lubricate with some spray grease.0

Thank you all for the advice! I have cleaned, degreased, re-lubed it a couple of times already...Going from smaller cogs to bigger ones works fine but the other way around sometimes you just push it and it doesn't click and doesn't move the cable. The cable seems OK but I'll put a new one in just in case before I start telling myself that going to 11 speed 6800 is the only reasonable solution :-)

That's what mine did before they before broke completely absolutely miles from home - give it a bash though and see what happens and just upgrade anyway, keeping these as spares for the winter bike build.Postby team47b » Sun Jun 28, 2015 11:53 am

BTW am I right in thinking that 11s shifters will work with 10s mechs and will just need 11s rings and cassette?0

No, annoyingly they won't. Shimano changed the pull ratio when they went to 11 speed.
So you need shifters, chain, cassette and both mechs. 10 speed chainset would be OK though.0 -
^^^^And possibly a new 11sp hub if yours isn't already compatible .0

I had the same on a 5700 sti, turned out to be frayed cable. fine going up but wouldn't release to go down.0

Opened it up, flooded it in WD-40, cleaned, lubed, pulled the cable out and it looks like new...cleaned and lubed it and will give it a go...if it still slips then I'll start looking at the upgrade...
Checked the rear mech as well and the spring still feels springy so I think that one is still OK...
thx everyone!0
