Garmin Maps Place Names

Hi there I have UK maps installed on a Garmin 810 that I had from Open Source maps , The problem I have is that there does not appear to be Town/Village names on the maps, the road detail and road names when zoomed are all there, but i find it, as you can imagine, pretty confusing without place names as a reference, it's hard enough to navigate in reasonably familiar surroundings, but when in an unfamiliar area, its nigh on impossible.
It happened on the majorca maps i got from there too.
Have I done something wrong when selecting the maps do you think? or is this how they are from open source?
Any tips would be appreciated, Cheers

On the 800 there are settings to determine the level of detail shown at various zoom levels, and you can apply this to various elements of the data.
Settings - system - map - map visibility custom - zoom levels points, streets, etc
It may vary a bit on the 810 but the principle should be the same.
