i intend to finish my first BRM 200km. i'll do it during a holiday in other country. i am a little undecided if i should:
-buy a bag/bike pod/ case and bring my own bike (200E the bag + 50 E transportation)
-i might rent one (75E a weekend +300E deposit) and bring my own saddle and adjustable stem (and may be the tires). then i'll measure all the dimensions of my bike and try to transpose them on the rented one. (servicing the bike is not a problem for me)
any advice ?

Not sure why you are planning to not do a BRM in your own country, but my thoughts would be using your own bike would certainly be better provided you're comfy on it.

That said, if you've got some good mental fortitude, 200km on a less than perfectly setup hire bike is likely to be just fine as well. Bit of pain never hurt anyone ;)

really, as long as the bike is nearly comfy, and you are not rushing around the 200, you will be fine with the bike.

Where are you planning to ride the BRM?

bike lanes (and is holiday time for me). i cycled in belgium and nederland for the last 5 years - bike lanes are the greatest human invention after the wheel...
    BRM Lier.
  • I would recommend using your own bike just because if you rent one, you won't know if you feel comfortable on that bike or not. At least with your own bike, you know that you made it to fit you.

Are you used to riding 200km?

That's a long way to go on a hire bike. It's very easy flying with bikes now and you don't have to buy a bag- you can hire if it's not going to be something you like to do.

If you're well used to longer distances then it might be fine.

180km is the distance I race at and I'd not think to hire a bike for it. Maybe if it was 90km I'd think about it.

    Whats BRM?
We're in danger of confusing passion with incompetence

    Brevet Randonneur Mondiaux

A set of standards for randonneuring events up to 1000km run under the control of Audax Club Parisien (longer than that LRM take over proceedings - sort of (for Paris Brest Paris at 1200km, it is validated by ACP) Anyway, I don't really care whether it's LRM or BRM, I just ride the flipping things!

    Standard distances are 200, 300, 400, 600 and 1000 under BRM.

120 till know, i am training to do 160 till april, and for the last 40 i'll pray. i am thinking that , even with an adjustable stem and my own saddle, i might have fitting problems... and you were not encouraged me...

So a longer distance than you're used to and on a strange bike. Not something I'd want to attempt.

    Just take your bike.
