My old Cube AMS Pro is broken - suspension pivot threaded :(

Looking to replace it with a more modern, bit burlier trail bike. For trail centre/occasional mountain use. 5'11, 13st. old relatively unfit guy so needs to be able to go uphill as well as down. But down's where the fun is, right?

These have caught my eye...

On One Codeine 29 (probably GX- ?)

Whyte 130S Yari?

YT Capra AL

Opinions welcome... especially where backed up with first hand experience...

Thanks,

Dan

Specialised Camber or Stumpjumper FSR are both worth looking at and test riding if you can.

    Giant Trance 2 27.5 2016 ¦ Sonder Broken Road 2021¦ Giant Revolt Advanced 2 2019 ¦ Giant Toughtroad SLR 1 2019 ¦ Giant Anthem 3 2015 ¦ Specialized Myka Comp FSR 2009
  • Why codeine 29 over 27.5?
Whyte t130, Trance, Anthem if more XC, Bird Aeris, Rose do the Uncle Jimbo and Granite Chief, Kona Process, Mondraker Foxy, Commencal Meta, Canyon Spectral etc; all worthy contenders but need a demo.

Personally I'll be avoiding the Capra and not keen on Canyon from a warranty perspective.

  • Why codeine 29 over 27.5?

Just thought the spec was better on the 29, tbh. And the few reviews you can find all seem to rate it pretty highly.

I'd forgotten about the Spectral, that's a decent shout too, though point taken the warranty issue...

    Thanks!

  • Still a good few 2015 Mondraker Foxy floating round at this price range too,

Ignore what most people tell you is best though and go test ride, what works for one doesn't for another! with what I was spending last time I bough a bike I was being told often about the Nomad and Bronson and so on, rode them and was pretty unimpressed compared to the competition. SO you never know get out and test!

I'd go for the Whyte personally, the spec is great for the money and the ride is meant to be awesome. As Waylander says the Foxy can be had for around that price if you look at 2015 models or stretch your budget to a 2016 one. I've had a Foxy for nearly a year now and it's been awesome, super capable bike. Perhaps not the most agile, but hit something rough and it's immense.

New Boardman, £1500, 27.5, Pike fork, 1x drive chain, Guide brakes. Spend an extra £200 on a dropper and you'll have a better spec bike than most at £2k.
  • Nukeproof Mega TR 275 if you can find a 2015 left. Not the most subtle or refined bike in the world but HUGE fun.

They're good once you replace that awful rear shock.
  • I love the buy a whyte, I've never ridden it and have no idea other than its pretty and someone else says its good....

Different bikes often suit very different people, test ride..

Tried a few during the summer and settled on a Trance. Some good bargain around on last years models at the moment.

There's a lot of that on this forum. It used to be Lappierre until they started making ugly bikes.
I would also recommend the Trance having owned older ones and ridden a new one. It's a great ride.

I've been toying with the idea of a trance or possibly a reign but I'm off to look at a t130s yari tomorrow the spec of the bike is loads better than the trance imo.

That Yari fork is heavy and a bit crude. The basic Pike is much better

Have a look at the latest Boardman, 4 link rear and a pike up front, very well specced and just £1500, long frame/short stem to current practice as well.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.
