Chain length with chain device - anything different?

Swapping over my lad's bike from 8sp to 9sp since his rear mech is bent and I've a few bits spare. It's a single ring front with a chain device. The new cage is longer than old one so can't replicate chain length. Is it just round the big sprocket and add 2 links, or does the chain device affect length any?

depends on the device. if it has a lower roller that holds the chain on the ring then yes you need it in place.

Yep, it has a little roller so I know it goes over that. Just wondering if that would need a longer chain or would that half-defeat the purpose by adding too much slack for the mech to take up.
  • No chain length needs to be the correct length for the system. If the device is shortening it then that needs to be compensated for
