From Canyon Aeroad to something

Hi All

New to this site (posting) but have been devouring threads and the site for some time. It's about time I asked a few questions as I have a dilemma.

Background: I've got a few events this year (Staffs Ironman 70.3, Ironman Long weekend, Small Tri's, London to Paris ride, General Sportives through the year etc). Keen weekend warrior as well :D

Just over a month ago I had ordered the AEROAD CF SLX 9.0 TEAM - Lots of bang for buck with components, great reviews and a sexy looking bike as well. Normal Canyon story unfolded where they actually lost the bike I ordered and cancelled it after over a month of me waiting and chasing them for delivery and updates.

Now I can't get my shiny new race ready bike in time for events I'm doing (and time in the saddle on the bike before them) so I'm looking for something else.

I've been back and forth over so many different bikes and now find myself unable to pinpoint the best options for me and my events..

So, if everyone had roughly £5k to spend on a bike that fits those events (and future ones), what would you buy and why?

Appreciate the answers and ideally for me, they'd be carbon (light), electronic shifters and either come with great wheels of make enough saving so I can invest in a great set of race wheels.

There was a story this morning on one of the other sites about John Degenkolb's fully-loaded 2015 Propel up for sale for £4999. Frame was a medium (54.5cm) which was why the owner was selling!

You looking at aero bikes or you not bothered?

Also geometry would be a consideration as well, do you know what fits you?

If aero then I'd go for something like this and then have money left for wheels, it has Ultegra Di2 and the mavics will serve as decent training wheels:

    http://www.triuk.com/products/cervelo/c ... rtKVKNFBHg

Alternatively I would buy a frameset (maybe a cannondale Super Six Evo Hi-Mod from Pauls Cycles and build a bike myself to my own spec, you could get the frameset for £800, an Ultegra Di2 groupo for £800, another £500 on bits and bobs, then have £2900 to spend on a set of training wheels and race wheels, jez you could even get a power meter and Garmin in that price!
Obsessed is a word used by the lazy to describe the dedicated!
  • Thanks Nick / Jesse

Aero - it was my first choice but I'm happy looking at other frames and bikes in all honesty. A slight turn of the head with aero bikes nowadays and you've lost all gains anyway :)

I'm currently riding an older BMC SR01 - Bought years ago, still love it to this day. It's my work horse and training bike in the cold and wet weather now.

Walked past Condor today as well and they've got the Leggero (team bikes on sale as well) on great offer and spec, super light, super stiff and leaves money for race wheels as well.

The Giant does look great and reviews are top notch as well. There's one on ebay, albeit a large, for £3.6k and not used as well.
  • For 5k I'd get the new Foil Premium frameset then spec the rest with the remaining 2 grand.

yuk. they look hideous. same as the venge. ghastly.
  • Got to pick the one you like the look of as all of them are plenty good enough for us. Personally I hate the Propel and don't like the look of the foil at all. Currently considering a Tarmac or a Venge (non vias). Not sure about the Cervelo S3. The Canyon does look the business though.

How about a Rose X-Lite CW? Seem to get good reviews and you can spec an Ultegra DI2 version with Zipp 404s for less than £4k. Not heard anything bad about their delivery times either.

Cervelo S3 Di2 and a set of Reynolds Assaults.
2020 Reilly Spectre - raw titanium
2020 Merida Reacto Disc Ltd - black on black
    2015 CAAD8 105 - very green - stripped to turbo bike
    2018 Planet X Exocet 2 - grey

    The departed:

    2017 Cervelo R3 DI2 - sold
    Boardman CX Team - sold
    Cannondale Synapse - broken
    Cube Streamer - stolen
    Boardman Road Comp - stolen
  • Not sure what the rules and regulations are around Ironman events but why not consider 2 bikes?

Bike 1, something like a Giant Propel (Westbrook cycles have some stock) (roughly 2.5k)

    http://www.westbrookcycles.co.uk/giant- ... 16-p290486

Bike 2, a proper TT bike. Maybe worth going 2nd hand and looking at the time trial forum or maybe even an Exocet from Planet X.
  • Thanks everyone

All good ideas - especially the one about two bikes....

Unbeliveably, Canyon emailed me back saying that they might have actually found the bike after it's been missing for 6 weeks!! they asked for another 10 days to confirm but seen as though I'm off to the Bike Show in London this weekend (where I might find a trusty steed on offer) I've said they only have until Friday to confirm..

That said, really do appreciate the feedback. Lots to think on.

I'm hoping 2017 models will finally go on sale here in the states. I really want the Aeroad SLX 9.0 and plan on using my Zipp 303's as soon as I receive it.

Buy a used S5 or new Felt AR and spend the rest on Reynolds Aeros.

    Bloody hell. Almost a physic..

Just bought brand new S5 with Reynolds at the bike show after heavy bargaining.

Well pleased as I've got money to spare to purchase 2x Allez Sprint frame when it's out soon for my build a bike project.

It was bike porn everywhere at the show. Superb.

Seconded, a lot of bike for your money if you upgrade the wheels, can be had for circa 3k without wheels inc di2

  • OK everyone. An update for anyone wondering. And yes, it get's worse...

I went to the London Bike (and Triathlon) show. It was amazing.

I bargained hard with a shop there and ended up buying a Cervelo S5, Reynolds Aero's, Ultegra Di2 etc. A truly lovely set-up. Deposit paid!!!

Canyon Bike have just emailed me with a dispatch note saying my order is on it's way. I have an email thread from them where they cancel the order saying it's lost. Then In the following thread I cancel the order twice.

So, it looks like the payment is going out for the Canyon and I have a Cervelo S5.

    Options include:

    - Keep both (I wish)
    - Fight and return Canyon who in my mind are basically committing fraudulent activity on my account?
    - Sell the S5 and try to get the price I paid?
    - Sell the Canyon (I got £800 off it in the first place) to someone who wants one and is annoyed at the LONG delivery times

Thoughts anyone. Pretty annoyed that Canyon are F*cking up so much here and £5k is a lot of money for them to take out of my account when I've cancelled an order.

    Thanks all.

Have you considered that you have 30 days to return the bike to Canyon for full refund?

I would tell Canyon to do one. They've cancelled the order, you have also cancelled the order, so they shouldn't have a leg to stand on.

refuse to accept the delivery, don't sign anything, They will have to refund the money

  • Also inform the bank that the order was cancelled and therefore your pre-authorisation to take the money no longer stands.

On delivery of the Canyon compare it with the S5 that will then tell you which one you want to keep, i would also complain to Canyon with the experience you have had, i am a canyon owner also, my bike build was delayed, they did send a gift "Picture book of the TDF" to soften the long wait time.

Th two bike proposition was gold. Don't go into a full distance ironman on a road bike. You'll regret it for so many reasons. First the pain that you get from the position and that makes the run afterwards a real hell. And the even more hurting reason are all the others going past you with twice the speed on their TT bikes.

Return the canyon at there expense and get a refund on it you have evidence it was cancelled so should be no issue, keep the S5 they are lovely
