My stepmum was a proper racer back in the Beryl Burton days and she always says that "you aren't a proper cyclist until you have repaired a puncture by the roadside in the snow by unstitching the tubular, patching the tube, and sewing the tub back up".

    Harsh.

    That's plain nonsense.
300 watts in isolation is meaningless - if your 125 kg it's not impressive.
If you're 60 kg it is.
  • Interesting to see individuals own definitions!

  • I would consider a cyclist someone that would rather ride on their bike somewhere instead of taking motorized transportation. I mean pretty much anyone that would be riding a bike would also be considered a cyclist, since your riding somewhere instead of driving/public transportation.
  • As soon as you get a bike, and ride it, you're a cyclist.

    I like this definition. :D

    I'd perhaps add:

when you choose to go for a bike ride, for not other reason than to ride
  • I felt I was a cyclist when I no longer forgot to clip out.
  • I felt I was a cyclist when I no longer forgot to clip out.
Ah yes, I remember that feeling.

And then there's the realisation you come to, when you haven't forgotten to unclip for a long long time, yet...

... just a few miles from home after a long ride...
    ... tired
    ... cold
    ... no flapjack left

.... that it's still possible to forget to unclip.

And it's the law - there will always be cute girls waiting to cross at the traffic light when over you go.

You'll feel like a cyclist then.

If being sexually repulsive to females is the mark of a cyclist then apparently I am a much more keen cyclist than previously thought...

Can't agree with that, I need my car for work so can't commute.

If I go out for dinner I'm not going to ride my bike there.

If I go round to some friends for a drink I'm not going to ride there.

If I go to the shops for the "big shop" I sure as hell aren't riding there.

If I take my son to football training I'm not going to ride there.

    The list goes on...

However, I'm currently trying to arrange a site survey on a sunny day so I can get a longer morning ride in before I set off (in my car).

I have two tabs open on my browser, BR and BBC Weather.

I have a turbo trainer and two bikes in the garage.

I have a wardrobe specificaly for riding clothes.

I have visited foreign counties specificaly to ride my bike.

    I get bike related presents.

    The list goes on...

Now tell me what you thing!

No one suggested that you couldn't use a car at all. Just that sometimes, you choose to ride, when you have a car, bus, or train available. I think you're worrying too much about this :D
  • The minute you give a hoot about 'POWERRRRRRRRR' and 'CADENCE', and the weight of everything. You truly are a cyclist.
