Garmin Edge 810 don't show left/right balance from Quark Riken powermeter

I have a new SRAM Quarq riken crankstel with powermeter. De software is up-to-date with version 2.4. My Garmin Edge 810 software is up-to-date with version 5.0. The Edge is showing me the total power, but not the left/right balance. Quarq Riken is able to meassure the left and right power.

Is there a setting on the Garmin or on the Quarq to enable this feature?

You need to go into the menus for the screens and select L/R balance if that's what you want displayed.
I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.
  • I was not clear about that, sorry. The L/R balance field is on the screen, but show me only -- % / -- % with no values.
  • Are you sure the Quarq Riken measures L and R. Pretty sure mine doesn't, but I've only got an Edge 500.

If you ctrl F and search for left, 8 of 15 should be a table which shows the data the Riken transmits.

I thought it was the ELSA that did L & R. More than happy to be proven wrong. New Garmin may in fact be calling.

  • Yes. The Riken crank has the Power Balance feature.

    Power Balance™

Power Balance uses crankset torque to display the ratio of power generated in the right drive stroke (12 o'clock to 6 o'clock) versus the left drive stroke (6 o'clock to 12 o'clock) for each crank revolution. Power Balance is used to test asymmetry and is an excellent aid for injury recovery.

In which case I'd unpair it and try reconnecting. If still no success, do you know someone with a pwoermeter you could pair your device to and see if it will show L/R balance? Alternatively, get someone with a bike computer to see if their device shows L/R balance from your pwoermeter when paired. That should at least identify which item has the problem.

When you analyse a ride afterwards on a computer, do you get a L/R balance trace then? If so, it would suggest there's something you've not done in setting the Garmin up correctly.

I wouldn't worry about it anyway. I have the feature, noticed I have a slight imbalance, carried on regardless.

Ditto. Does it really matter when those with two legs all have one dominant leg to a certain degree.
