Hi Everyone,

Newbie here looking for some advice.

I've signed up for a 150 mile 2-day ride in the summer and I'm now looking for a road bike to train and complete the ride with.

I'm on a very tight budget at the moment so I'm looking at second hand bikes but I'm not entirely sure what to look out for.

Does anyone have any advice for what type of bike i should get? reliable bikes/brands etc. I'm not expecting to find anything amazing, just something that will be good enough.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Ed

Umm.. In the region of £200 maybe a bit more :|
  • In terms of new road bikes that would be in my shortlist on a tight budget would include...

    http://www.decathlon.co.uk/triban-500-s ... 06187.html

Carbon forks on a new bike at ~£300 is still quite rare.

    2020 Voodoo Marasa
2017 Cube Attain GTC Pro Disc 2016
    2016 Voodoo Wazoo
  • If you go the second hand route I recommend the trek 1000 which can be had for £100 upwards or £200 for latest with carbon forks as long as you don't mind doing some Fettling tyres, brakes, mini service etc 1000 plus miles mine going strong .
  • Triban 3 second hand ??

    GREAT advice guys!

Thank you so so much. Really appreciate it.
  • You could also try the used forum on here....
  • What size are you after ?
  • I have always been a fan of trek road bikes, and as the person above stated you should be able to find a trek 100 for around that price range.

Specialized Allez may come in just over your budget - £200-£300 say.

There are bargains out there eg. last night a Trek Madone 4.7 carbon road bike with full Shimano Ultegra 6700 groupset, which went for just under £400 on eBay

Again - what size you looking for? Your height?

    Thanks so much guys.

I'm actually 6'8" so it'd be quite a big frame!

6'8" brings with it a lot more problems.

Realistically the second hand market for blokes your size is non existent.

Buying new is the only feasible way and you'll have to pay more than £200 for a decent bike.

You're also going to be heavier than the average cyclist so you can't skimp on the wheels.

That Triban even in the biggest frame is still only up to 6'7" - but you might get away with it.

    Cycling isn't cheap. Sorry !
