There must be a way to stop this, surely? What a waste of everyone's time though, including the people doing this

They are not people, they are bots. Even human spammers aren't that committed.

New members should have to use a Captcha code for a few posts. I know it's inconvenient and might deter a few new members but it'd stop the bots who spam on here.

It must take up a lot of admin's time to remove all the spam threads and ban the posters.

Sadly this isn't a feature that exists within the forum software. I wish it were!

How about all new members having to be accepted before being able to post, we do that on a forum that I 'm a mod on and we use phpBB forum software.

Unfortunately it also means that users wouldn't be able to jump into the conversation on the forum, which hampers the experience for real users. Then we're "letting the spammers win", to some degree. It also wouldn't help when user accounts are created with fairly innocent looking emails, IPs and usernames, because we'd have no way of knowing they weren't a legitimate user until after we had approved them and they began spamming. Not every spammer signs up with blazingly obvious details, sadly.
