Headset Replacement / Compatibility

I have a 2010 Specialized Secteur Sport, which is described in the Specialized archive as having the following headset: "Cage bearings integrated HS. w/ 20mm of spacers w/ top cap"

I had this replaced by an LBS relatively recently, but the replacement is already feels rough. When it was replaced they told me a Specialized Mindset is the only headset compatible with my bike. (I believe this applies to Allez models of the same period). Does anyone know if this is true, or if there is a way to make a different headset compatible with my bike? Ideally I was thinking of getting this from Wiggle since it's so cheap http://www.wiggle.co.uk/lifeline-1-18-1 ... alloy-cap/

Also are there any general rules about headset compatibility beyond the sizes needing to match? I know my cassette compatibilities but headsets seem to be another level more complex to me! :?

  • The lbs is talking bollocks knock out the races the mindset caged bearings sit in and you can use sealed cartridge bearings. Loads on here, myself included, have done this with our Spesh bikes and there are a fair few old threads detailing exactly how including pics. Search for mindset replacement, or Specialized headset etc. Info on compatibility is here

Well worth doing as sealed cartridge is so much easier to work with.
