I am looking at getting a new power meter and my first choice is a Stages ultegra. Problem I am having is finding the 6700 in Grey. My options are

1. Get the 6800
2. Get the 105 5700 or 5800 in black
3. Get the Pioneer 6800

Is the 105 black very different from the Ultegra Grey - i.e is it REALLY noticable? If its not I am more likely to just get this instead. I would prefer the Ultegra 6800 but if I can save a few quid getting the 105 then I will but only if its not too different in colour

TIA

Get the 105 in black, sell the Ultegra and buy a 105 chainset?

    Same as above but Ultegra?

That is just going to cost me more for absolutely no reason and I would no longer have a full Ultegra setup. Kind of going backwards replacing kit with inferior.

Ok, my presumption you would be happy with 105 was based on your option 2, however if you are not happy with a 105 chain-set, couldn’t you sell the 6700 chain-set and buy a second-hand 6800 chain-set, it may cost a little more but you would be getting a chain-set of equal (if not better) quality for not a lot more money, then you would still have full Ultegra albeit a mix of 6700 and 6800. Then you can get a stages 6800 crank arm to match.

IMO the black 105 (5800) is very different to the 6700 grey (and the 6800 grey), what length crank do you need?

Found these but guess you have already come across them in your searches

I don't need to change the 6700. The shimano stages are all compatible with each other. I could use DA on it if I wanted. Its just the aesthetic side. I could use the newer 6800 version quite happily on the 6700 chainset its just they cost more for no reason other than its a newer version. I can find the 6700 in Silver everywhere but I have grey. Buying something second hand to replace new is not cost effective and would probably cost me more than just spending the extra on the Ultegra 6800 which seems like the only option.

The info I was after that you did provide was that the 105 in black looks too different to the grey . thanks for that. I will just get the 6800 Stages as no other option looks cost effective.
  • would go for the Pioneer without a doubt... you can get new chain rings with it in all ratios... just to save buying another crank down the line...

I had considered pioneer. Especially since they have dropped their pricein direct competition but I would still only go for the left crank arm only version. The full chainset is out of my price range ( wife will allow me to spend ) right now. Otherwise I would be getting a power2max instead.

Looking at the stages website they say the 6700 is only available in silver which maybe why you cant find a grey one (bottom of the page here: http://www.stagescycling.eu/shop/CYCLOC ... -6700.html )

Looks like 6800 is the only option as you mentioned.

I use a black 5700 stages on 6800 crankset without any issues and you can't really notice the slight difference in colour / design.

Thanks. I guess I may need to get a look at it. I know the shape is almost identical anyway. Tbh its not like I spend all day taking pics of the thing. Ive seen worse mismatched cranks in the past.
