Groupsets

Hello I have recently returned to road biking and am restoring a Cilo Stratos. I need some advice on the gear side. I am going to run 7 speeds. I can purchase used Shimano 600 groupsets a number of which are well used and a bit pricy. I have been looking at later Ultegra sets, most of which are 8-10 speed. Am I correct in thinking I can use these mechs both front and rear by restricting their travel with the adjuster stops? Also if I use index shifters will they work with something like a Shimano Arabesque and give index shifting, or will it be friction shift only?

You could use a Claris, Sora, Tiagra, 105 10sp, Ultegra 10sp, rear derailleur with a fiction shifter, with a 7sp FreeWheel/Cassette as long as you set up the H/L limit screw accordingly. If you are going to use an index shifter you will need one that matches the spacing of the 7sp FW/Cassette and has the correct cable pull ratio for the rear derailleur.
Not sure if the 600EX Arabesque 6sp levers are index only, fiction or switchable between the two modes? They may have enough throw to work with a 7sp gear cluster, if friction mode, you would need to try it to be sure.0 -
Might be worth posting a query on Retrobike as they are more likely to be able to cobble together the old school stuff:

Does it have to be Ultegra? I can do you a Sora 7 speed shifters, brand new cassette, front mech, rear mech combo for a snip just to clear it out of my life.
I may even throw in new cables as I'm nice if you want it all.Postby team47b » Sun Jun 28, 2015 11:53 am

Thanks Matthew I had not planned to go that current but it would do the job nicely, how much would you want for it all? I have Sora on my cyclocross bike, the shifters are part of the brake lever, are these the same. apologies if you receive several responses from me, I am new to the forum.

Cool - sounds great. Thank you.
I'm just picking this up for work so will drop a pm tomorrow: do you have an email I can ping some piccies to?
Again, many thanks
