So my BB is making noise even with small amounts pressure so probably best to replace. Its been abused for 3 years in all weathers and not look after.

So today when trying to remove the crank so I could get at it and give it a clean and try and get some grease into the bearings some how, I realise that the crank arm has fused tight. I have tried gentle heat and previously pumped in some good old fashioned penetrating lube the thing is stuck fast.

So my now dilemma new bike ;-) or replace the Crank with and BB with the following:

Anybody run these on their commuters. I currently run a Miche wheel-set and I have to say are bomb proof and they take the Monday and Friday Load just fine with me (85kg for me, 10kg for the backpack and the bike must be 13kg) as well as my normal thrashing around.
The doctor said I needed to start drinking more whiskey. Also, I’m calling myself ‘the doctor’ now

I assume its a square taper crank? Did you use a crank puller or did you expect it to just come off a taper fixing?

One way to get them off is to undo the bolt and ride it, they often fall off after a short while!
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

I used a crank puller as well and maybe some bad language and threats of violence.

I will give it a bash today at lunch with the bolt undone a bit.

Did you remember to fish out the washer when you took out the crank bolt? Is it definitely square taper? Is it possibly a self-extracting crank type?

It would help if we knew what chainset and bottom bracket you have on there

  • You might find that the crank bolt has a separate washer that's sat still inside the crank.
If you try and remove the crank without taking hte washer out, you will strip the threads of the crank. You tend to do this only once...

If you take the bolt out and ride it, then you usually find the arm falls off. However (1) this will happen a few miles from home, meaning a long walk (2) you knacker the crank arm for any future use.

Heat won't work - the crank arm will expand, tightening on to the spindle.

A decent crank remover is your best bet.
