For those who think it's okay to throw a banana skin into a bush or hedgerow when out cycling, when they eat a banana at home, do they just throw the banana skin into their own garden to decompose? I would doubt it.

I for one have done it many times. Compost, don't you know.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

Yeah, unlike all of the really important stuff we normally talk about here - which carbon wheels to buy, mechanical or Di2...

Actually - I do. But not only that, I also bring back banana skins and tea bags from work and compost those as well. If only the coffee at work was ground coffee instead of instant. I'd have that as well. It all goes either onto the compost heap or in the wormery.
  • Compost heap is ok but depending where you throw out the skins on your ride makes a bit of a difference. If in the mountains on your MTB it's not good since they don't compost that well in a probably acidic mountain soil that well. Lower down in a grass verge in say York plains then perhaps no issue.

Personally I pack out what I pack in. Hardly a pita is it?

PS anyone try smoking dried banana skins as a kid? That old getting high.thing that goes around school when you're young.

    Did you inhale?

I heard it was just the stringy bits that did it and you had to grill it. It might have been just a rumour.

Tried this as a teenager. We dried and smoked whole skins and only afterwards heard that you were only supposed to smoke the stringy bits... We managed to just about convince ourselves that we were perceiving the floor to be sloping more than it actually was. One of us even managed to fall over. Just goes to show the power of the placebo effect...

Also smoked tea. I don't recommend that.

Also quite possibly when I started to develop cynicism.

  • A lass at our school had a few days off sick then came back with hair heavily dyed red and a rumour she'd been ill after trying to smoke dried leaves to.get high. It was autumn and we all guessed she was a bit of a stoner at times so it kind of made sense. :D

In the hedge? hmm no big deal but not where it ca be seen. In the middle of the road. Fine by me. It will be smashed in no time and make its own happy way back to the soil.
here in the FoD the sheep and wild boar enjoy the skins.

Better than putting it in the bin and sending it to landfill where it won't decompose for decades. Of course, rather than throwing it into the garden, throwing it into the compost bin might be more sensible......

Yes sometimes I do - not on the lawn but we've got quite a "mature" garden - unkind neighbours may call it unkempt - and if I leave the house with a banana or finishing an apple or some other fruit I'll quite often toss the skin, core, stone or whatever behind our hedge out of sight.

I tend to leave mine in the front garden though, it goes nicely next to the old sofa and washing machine...
Ooooo! Look at you. A washing machine. Fancy pants.

Where's the 'not very biodegradable' line drawn?

    Into a hedge / verge:

    - water - definitely not litter
    - thick veggie soup - not litter ?
    - digestive biscuits - not litter ?

    - jelly - litter ?
    - chocolate hob nobs - litter ?
    - chicken wings - definitely litter

I believe all of those things would biodegrade / get scavenged quicker than a banana skin. With the possible exception of the chicken & puppy bones..
