Hi all,
I recently discovered that my bike's rear wheel makes a pretty loud noise whenever it's free spinning (pedals aren't moving), the faster the wheels spinning the louder it gets and I have no idea what has caused this. The noise is loud enough to cover the clicking sound it makes when free spinning. Any ideas?

Probably a bearing then? What make and model of rear hub?

There are many different types of 'wheel' out there!
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

Ok that's a formula hub, is there any play in the wheel?

You'll have to remove the wheel and strip down the hub and give it a basic service.

    Alright cheers
  • Lift the back wheel off the ground. If its noisy when you spin it by the pedals then it's the wheel bearings, if it's noisy when you spin it with the pedals still then it's the freehub bearings

This may be a stupid idea, but it's not the 'dork disk' is it? (Apologies for the horrible phrase, not sure what else to call it!) Can't say mine was the same noise but the thing came un-clipped so often and was so wonky even when clipped in it often rubbed on the rear of the cassette. I've removed it now.
