So this morning I rode my road bike into work having been off it for a while and riding my flat bar bike. the flat bar has platform pedals on it but the road bike has SPD's. I pulled up at some lights and unclipped but when I went to put my foot down I hit the pedal and clipped back in resulting in this:

https://youtu.be/zeQ8u63iZTg

It was embarrassing and luckily only slightly bruised my knee so not too bad but now I am getting a little dubious about the ride home and if it happens in a slightly more dangerous situation. Anyone else felt this after a minor off? :(

Its a classic SPD incident- we have all had them! don't worry about it.

Was about to say the same.

It happens to everyone at some point or another, even to people that have been riding for years.

  • Don't worry you won't do that again in a hurry.

Over the weekend you should tighten the cleats then they will be less likely to "fall back in"

Cheers, felt a bit of a numpty. It was almost slow motion in my head as I tilted over helplessly! Just take it easy on way home I suppose and keep at it.

I hit a wet manhole cover cornering at 20mph last summer. I was all over the road before I even realised what had happened. Dislocation of shoulder, ligament damage, wicked road rash, ruined bibs and jersey, severely wounded pride and a bad case of worrying about what could have happened. I picked myself up and rode the 5k home, then went to a&e and was back on the bike after 4 weeks. I now don't ride quickly round corners in the wet. Regarding clipless moments, I've had 2, both v low speed, and neither bothered me that much.

Ouch! I always make sure to slow for corners in wet and avoid manholes if possible after an off when I was about 15 riding home from school. Shook me up then but as a kid you just carry on. Now I'm older (a lot) frights take a little longer to recover from. I'll just have to get back on tonight and get on with it!

    Had similar last week.
Was riding close behind a clubmate when his chain dropped. We both slowed and all was fine. I stopped behind him but my front wheel was very slightly overlapping his rear (while we were stationary).
I unclipped but for some reason it snagged just as he was getting off his bike. In getting off his bike he leaned it slightly, which just meant that it pushed my front wheel over very gently just as I was unbalanced. Queue a frantic unclip, not quite getting a food down in time and landing on my arse.

Sore tailbone for a few days and felt stupid but no harm done.

Actually, one of the clipless moments did bother me. I was right in front of a group of yummy mummies waiting at ped lights near Clapham Common - I ended up on my backside with my legs in the air with bike still attached. They absolutely p*ssed themselves laughing. It took weeks to stop blushing at the memory.

The bike escaped unscathed by the way in case anyone was worried about a damaged machine!

I was more concerned about your Sidi Wire's to be honest. They ok?

I also had an accident last year, hit a kerb, went over the handlebars, landed mouth first and knocked out 4 front teeth. I got back on the bike and cycled, past the A&E hospital, home, with my face covered in claret. Didn't actually go to hospital until the next day.

Not a pretty site I guess, but it was dark by then!

Going through the lanes this morning I was wondering whether I'd also be going down at some point, especially after I came across a transit on it's side; black ice is a female dog, thankfully I got through it without incident.

Looking at the weather forecast for next week, time to release the ice tyres

Don't know whereabouts you are but don't envy the people in the icy parts of the country right now, time for everyone to take it easy, it seems the temperatures are dropping next week all over.

I also ride horses as well as bikes... this is the general advice when you fall off (and riding horses, falling off is inevitable eventually). Same applies to bikes I think. :D

Love the furtive little look round to see if anyone else was watching... :lol

When I was first riding with SPDs I managed to avoid the failure to clip out FUBAR for weeks. I was immensely proud of myself... until I fell into someone's convertible at a set of lights in Reigate.

I was riding with a friend a couple of years ago who had been riding with SPDs for years. She proudly stated that she'd never had a clipped-in falling incident. Literally 3 minutes later at a set of traffic lights, she slow-motion toppled over, like Del boy in the wine bar, right in front of me.

haha yes I looked to see if anyone saw me, which of course they all did  . I also made eye contact with the lady in the car just behind and we both laughed. Must have looked hilarious from behind. Probably made a few peoples day.

You should try riding with old style straps. Done up tight.
Nothing like a slow motion timber in the High Street during rush hour to bring a smile to everyone's faces.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

Done it twice in 10 years of SPD use. First time was the day after coming on here and telling the world I'd never fallen off :D Pulled into a field gateway for a pee, and as usual unclipped my left foot. Unfortunately the bumpy ground toppled the bike to the right so I went down like a fridge. Nobody saw it though, so it doesn't really count!

Second time was worse. Trying to fit in a last ride before going on holiday. Flew down the drive clipped in, but changed my mind about joining the road at the last second as a car came out of nowhere. Again fell on the expensive side smack on the pavement. Big chunk out of knee and knuckles, scuffed saddle, twisted lever etc. This time spotted by 2 teenage girls  So hopped straight back on and kept going while the pain slowly kicked in. When I got to the first hill I also found I'd bent the rear mech hanger and couldn't get the 3 lowest gears without the rear mech hitting the spokes

The holiday turned out to be a good place to heal a knee wound; always in shorts or swimwear, lots of salt water, sunshine and frequent showers, generous application of sun-screen, and plenty of alcohol to dull the pain :D

Thanks for that, sounds like everyone has done it at some point! Will check the mech hanger at lunchtime, didn't look at that when I got in. Thanks for the reminder.

My worst by far was in the middle of a big day out (250+km) with work mates; I make an ill-timed and un-reconned attack from the front up what I thought was the final hill before our planned lunch stop with 160km in the legs, only to underestimate the gradient and length. Peloton (9 riders) sweeps past laughing and I'm spat out the back. Cue a lonely 7 km slog into headwinds watching these chaps pedal away into the distance. I arrive at our stop, blowing, pull up next to the guys who were sitting astride their bikes only to find that my legs were so shot that I literally could not unclip from my speedplays. I topple over; taking out at least three other guys and scuffing some extremely blingy bikes (not mine!) in the process. Ate lunch by myself that day. :D

    Ha!

A couple of years ago I went out on a training ride with three guys - I was preparing for L2P24, they were preparing for RideLondon. I was on my shitty CAAD8, they were on about 20 grand's worth of Dogma, Venge and Domane. Spent 80km on the front on the flats, and 15km hanging out the back holding on for dear life on any climbs (I was a bit fatter then...). Eventually smashed my way past on what I thought was the last hill of the day (Ide hill) to try and recover a tiny bit of lost pride, only to discover Yorks hill was our final climb. The bastards swept past me laughing as I died about 100 yards up it, then watched me struggle up with a face like a beetroot, panting like Ivor the Engine. One of them stopped laughing as I misjudged a slippery patch, ploughed into his Trek and bent his rear mech hanger...

I've done it at least twice.

Once was when my brake cables BOTH froze solid. I managed to get one to work and I was so relieved when I stopped just before the junction and the passing cars that I forgot to unclip. Fell over in a laughing heap of relief.

Second was waiting for a bike crossing light to go green. Instead of unclipping, I'd grabbed a rail. When I went to go, I was in totally the wrong gear and just toppled over in front of the traffic.

Hope your ride home is fine

Thanks, just going to take it extra cautious. Not looking forward to the first set of lights. Leaving early too so I avoid the main rush.

I was performing a textbook trackstand, turned the front wheel to keep balance and the mudguard clipped my toe. Went down in front of a queue of cars like a sack of ****.
  • Oops, you won't do that again. As others have said, man up and get back on the bike. Practice makes perfect.

I've never had a clipless moment in about 5 years *touch wood* although had a few near misses on my current bike due to toe overlap on the front mudguard and catching my foot on it while attempting to trackstand.
