Will 105 5800 crankset work on 10 speed?

Hello, I am looking to upgrade the crankset on my bike, currently it has the Shimano FC-R565 and I am looking at 105 5800, which is 11 speed. I currently use 10speed shifters, ultegra 10speed cassette and ultegra chain.
I hear that Shimano doesn't recommend using the 11speed crankset on 10s but others have tried it with no issues at all?
What is the difference between 105 5750 and 5800 except the speed "limitation"?

Should work fine. I run a 6800 chainset on my bike which is otherwise 10 speed 6700. Had it on about 18 months now, works perfectly.
I suspect 5800 will be the same.
I also upgraded from the R565, crappy aren't they!0 -

Did you notice any difference performance wise? is power transfer better?0 -

It felt stiffer and had better power transfer. Of course it could all be in my head!0 -

Great, thanks. If anyone else has also tried that kind of setup please let me know if there are potential issues or not.0 -

There really isn't! It's a straight swap! Undo the clamp bolts and the plastic bolt with one of these, http://www.amazon.co.uk/Shimano-Hollow-Tech-Install-Workshop/dp/B0013B2VDY slide out the old one, then put the new one in, the chain and and tighten up.0 -
It might work depends on how you tweak it.....
You may or may not have issues on shifting...especially when changing gear at heavy load...0 -

If you think you're going to experience a performance difference by upgrading your chainset, prepare for disappointment.0 -

I didn't mean it like "is it going to increase my average speed by 5km/h", more like if it's a better made chainset than the older shimano I was using.
Anyway, I went with the Ultegra 6750 (105 wasn't in stock) which is 175mm, my current chainset is 172.5.
I'll see how it goes, it's going to be placed on the Planet X pro carbon frameset.0 -

This is complete rubbish. Just like fitting an exact replacement crank may result in issues with shifting if you don't "tweak" it right.
I am running a 5800 on 10 speed components, no issues what so ever it was a like for like replacement on the previous chainset0 -
Don't change your crank length just because that's what they had in stock!
It's a fundamental fit change and something you should ONLY do if you need to do so because your previous chainset was the wrong size.0 -

I am 1.78 with 81cm inseam, and I used this formula: http://www.nettally.com/palmk/crankset.html
Even if I needed a 170mm and got a 175 will it make that much difference? I don't race or anything.
Also I don't know how to tell if the other crankset was the wrong size or not, and there aren't any professional fitters around here to find out.0 -

As long as you are sure. And it's not about racing; far from it. It's about having the correct fit and not messing up your back / knees / everywhere else.0 -
Well what crankset size do people of my height usually use? I did search before purchasing and there are a few methods to determine the crankset size but they differ from each other.
Personally I went with the 175mm because I have longer legs and I also found that formula/article I linked.
Will see how it goes though and look at it if I don't feel the fit is correct after doing few runs. I don't do many km's though (around 50 each ride).0 -
Probably for your height 172.5.
Changing crank length will mean altering the saddle height, unless you already run 175 cranks.0 -
Now is also the time to decide on your ratios. Happy with 50/34 or want to try 52/36 or some other combo?
As for crank length, stick with what you have if it's working for you. As changing that can have knock on effects from one thing to another and before you know it you've got a bad back and bad knees.0 -

I am happy with it, since on climbs I feel I could even use a 32.
The fit seems fine as well since I am not getting any back or knee pain, but will see how this goes with the new 175mm too (I doubt 3mm would make any difference). Thanks for the suggestions.0
