Hi there,
I am looking for some pure disc clincher wheels up to around £300ish please. they need to be able to deal with road tyres (say 28mm) and cyclocross tyres. Tubeless would be an advantage too.
Need QR front and rear as it's for an on-one pickenflick.
What are my best options please? Stans Grail ?
Thank you

Grails are certainly a good wheel on paper but for some reason my ferret like 63kg wingman seams to wreck his? I've got Velocity Ailerons which are a little deeper and knats heavier but appear to be a robust rim.

Thank you, so hand builds seem the best option.0 -
There are certainly benefits to having handbuilt wheels. I bought some Iron Cross wheels from Spokesman 2 years ago and they've never let me down, he built them up to suit my weight. After that he built some Alpha 340s for my lad who weighs nothing so they are super spindly 1310g and again they've been raced week after and week and I've never touched them and after that he's done CX tubs for the boy and the Ailerons for the mrs which are all pucka. The same cant be said for the PX carbon 50 tubs I bought - they've spent more time in the LBS than on the bike.0

What about Kinesis Crosslight CX Disc? Good reviews and they look to be good value. Into version 4 for 2016 and they make an "HD" heavy duty version with 32 spokes.0

I suspected the Iron Crosses are a bit on the flimsy side for me (80kg), being essentially the disc version of the Alpha 340, but I might be wrong there.
I've seen very few cases of failed rims (other than due to brake wear, which doesn't apply here). I rather suspect the majority of wheel failures are down to poor building.Pannier, 120rpm.0 -
WHS ^^^
I'm 83kg and my 32H Iron Cross have been bullet proof but I don't go as quick as TGOTB
I did want to say how about the Kinesis but they don't appear to be tubeless...0 -

To be clear, they're not tubeless-ready out of the box, but I was using the Stans conversion kit. You (and I) may well have better luck with other tyres - check, er here http://forums.mtbr.com/cyclocross/cx-tubeless-setup-thread-735112.html or http://www.cxmagazine.com/going-tubeless-cyclocross-tires-racing-recommendations for compatibility.0 -
Cheers for all of the helpful information!
Has anybody looked into the new wiggle own brands ?

Seems interesting!
I think otherwise I will go for some 24/28 spoke Stan's Grails not sure on hub yet will tap up that wheel builder and see what they recommend.0 -
The Cosine wheels appear to be not tubeless compatible. But may be an OK sacrifice given the low price.0

Yeah I know what you mean, tubeless have been awesome on my mountain bike and seems like a good idea for CX0 -
So thinking I will go hand built, question is spoke count . 24 or 28 with the Grails.
I am about 90kg with the Xmas bloat :? So that will drop quite a bit, and I will only be doing bridleways nothing too hard core off road, will the 24 spoke be okay?0 -

They are a very good idea for cross. Bear in mind you don't need "tubeless-compatible" rims to go tubeless. I and many others have converted non-tubeless rims and standard (non-tubeless) tyres with the Stans kit, and on the other hand tubeless-ready rims are only designed for actual tubeless tyres which may limit your options. (I failed to get tubeless-ready Hunt 4 Seasons set up tubeless with standard tyres). Check the links I posted.0 -

32H all day long. It wont weight more than a few grams more but it'll see you through anything and never need any attention.0
