Hello all,
I have a 2014 Synapse Alloy Disc 5 105 (stock)

Specs: http://www.infinitecycles.com/bikes/road-bikes-2014/2014-synapse-alloy
Pic: http://www.infinitecycles.com/wp/uploads/media/2013/12/C14_700M_SYNAL_5_RAW.jpg

I have been riding for 2 years. I am a big guy 250 lbs. I ride 30-40 miles all flat. This year with some pressure from some friends I signed up for a Medio Gran Fondo (50 Miles). A lot of climbing for a big guy who never did any climbing before. I joined a few training rides and was recommend by the group leader that I would do better with a 30,32 or 34 teeth rear cassette to help me ease up the mountain. After doing some investigating I found that I already have a Shimano 12-30t Tiagra CS4600 10 Speed Cassette. I want to upgrade to maybe a 11-32 or 11-34T. I found online that Shimano new line of Tiagra the HG Cassette Sprocket (10-speed) CS-HG500-10 has a 11-32T and a 11-34T options.( http://bike.shimano.com/content/sac-bike/en/home/components11/road/Tiagra4700/cs-hg500-10.html)
Looking for facts and advice.
What fits ,what does not. What other part changes I might have to make.
what other groupings might i use. if any else made this type of change before what they did.
Should i make the change at all.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Steven M.

Welcome to the forum Steve, this thread goes on a bit but there are some good points about gearing:

One thing that you can do with your 5 arm compact crankset is to swop the 34T inner ring for a 33T, which will help. TA make one http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/ta-zephyr-110mm-bcd-5-arm-inner-chainring-black-prod38044/

You will need to check which 105 RD you have fitted to your bike, RD 5700 SS or GS ?

The rear RD 5700 GS derailleur will take a 32T maximum low sprocket and a 11T minimum top sprocket, so you can use the CS-HG500-10 11-32T 10sp cassette, but not the 11-34T. You would need a longer chain and also adjust the B-Tension screw in to give you the required clearance between the derailleur top guide pulley and the 32T sprocket.

If you have the RD 5700 SS the max low sprocket is 30T, which is what you say you have as O.E, 12-30T so it could be the SS.

    Thanks for both responses
will read more and follow up
  • I've just done mine yesterday. I bought a 105 gs as it was cheaper than the new 2016 kit an a mountain bike 11/32. Plus new chain. Will take pics of boxes later if you like? All went together easy, buy you do need to adjust the stop screws at either end and the screw at the top to make sure the chain ans jockey wheel clears the large sprocket.
  • OK you can check the photos below (remember this is for a ten speed , which I assume yours is too?) and note the part numbers. They fit straight on but the derailleur needs adjustment.

    1 take off old chain.
    2 take out rear wheel.
3 remove old cassette and fit new one.
    4 remove old derailleur
5 replace wheel and fit new derailleur
6 now it's time to set the limit of travel top and bottom using the two little screws that sit next to one another.
7 use your hand to pull the derailleur all the way to the big sprocket, it will most likely not line up with the sprocket as it will have been stopped by the screw. Turn the correct screw to allow the mech to move over enough so the small jockey wheel aligns with the sprocket. Do the same with the small sprocket.
8 refit cable into derailleur, pull it slightly to take some of the slack up. The jockey wheel should more or less be lined up with the small sprocket. Make sure gear changer was in this gear before.
9 use adjuster at end of cable to get it 100% aligned.
    10 fit chain.
11 Check gears all work OK. Then move to large gear (32).
12 now turn peddle backwards and check distance of jockey wheel to sprocket. It will most likely be too close and clicking so it needs adjusting.
13 there is a small screw on the bit that mounts to the frame that will move the mech backwards to clear the wheel and sprocket.
    14 enjoy easier peddling :)
