Hi All,

Been reading the forum for a past month or so, just now decided to register. Basically I am seriously considering purchasing MTB byy April/May.

I would like to get some advice on which bike to get, my current requirements
1. Price between $1000-$3500
2. Well suited for high speed mountain riding (e.g. Blue Mountain)
3. Suited for tall rider (6'1), 165lb
4. Durable and Well respected brand (something that doesn't depreciate fast in value)

I am considering brands such as Specialized, Cube, and Nicolai (Seems hard to find here in Canada). Open to suggestions.

Basically, I need a good, solid made bike. Invest once and let it ride :)

There's really no such thing as a solid bike. There are frames, which sometimes differ, and components hanging off, which break and wear out. Not sure there's much point in trying to buy a bike as an investment.

Over here Cube are virtually considered a budget brand, Specialized are OK at the more expensive end but their cheaper offerings are pretty rubbish, spec wise.
Nicolai are premium, but even then second hand are not worth much. Picked one up a few months ago with Fox 36s, Cane Creek DB coil, full XT and a Reverb for just over £1000.

You are probably better off looking at a North American brand like Santa Cruz or Ibis, which are expensive here but quite reasonable over there. Your price range is sort of budget to very nice, so you might want to narrow it down.

Not many Canadians on here, it's basically a UK forum, so a bit difficult to suggest good deals over there, or even, for most of us, know what a Blue Mountain is.

Nicolai are cheap used for a good reason, they are almost guaranteed to crack.

    Aaah my happy friend.

We'll see, they do generally get ridden quite hard, but I certainly haven't heard many scare stories compared to Lapierre for example.

And the factory can fix anything, obviously, although at a price.

But as the rider weighs about as much as one of my legs it'll take some effort to break.
