I have a Superfly 5 with XT rear and a X7 sram front and I want to replace the X7 with an XT but looking at the listings there are loads of XT fronts..
So which is the best mid range one and why so many different ones.
Cheers

You need the right one to match your frame fixing and cable routing.
Personally I wouldn't bother, you won't notice the difference. Front mech all work pretty much the same, there's not really any performance improvement to be had.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -
I am going to upgrade the brakes to XT and the chainset to XT so I might as well do the front mech as well then sell the stuff I take off on fleebay..
I agree it won't improve much but it will be all the same components..0 -
It's just throwing money away. The XT chainset won't give any performance improvement either.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350

I hear what you are saying but it will annoy me no end if I din't change it.0 -
You suffer from CDO right (that's OCD for those who don't suffer the condition so badly they have to put the letters in alphabetical order)......
I use what does the best job, before going 1x the lightest front mech I had was a Deore, lighter than XT.
The XT cranks are the same weight as SLX, only the rings make it lighter.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -

Ha Ha Ha.. your dead right I am very anal but when I had my last two motorbikes a Honda Blackbird and a WR 450 motocrosser I was just the same..
I have a problem with what front to order as I rang evans yesterday and he gave me a a number for the front a M 786 but when I looked on the web site there's two of them.. plus I'm having trouble with getting the right BB for the Superfly that fits the XT 785 40/28 all good fun.. I think ...

Why don't you ride the bike and do some homework for when you actually need to change things?I don't do smileys.

Yes, one FD is high mount the other direct mount, if you have a direct mount tab on the frame you use that, otherwise you can't use it!Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

Just changing the front derail and the crankset is no big deal to me I will keep what I take off for spares or flog on fleebay..0 -

I will have a ride round for a month or two and see how it feels and up grade the forks if needed..
PS. I dont run two motorbikes anymore so if I spend £100 its not a problem?0 -

I'll ring evans back later and sort it..0 -
You can tell if the front mech is direct mount easily enough, there is no clamp round the frame!

It seems to be, or you wouldn't need loads of threads on it.
Makes more sense to ride and see what will improve things than randomly decide on ring sizes and the letters on components.I don't do smileys.

I do agree in some way with what you say, but I know that a 36/22 is too small and I need to go a bit bigger.
But riding the bike first to see if I need better forks or wheels is the right thing to do.0
