Chainring Replacements - does # of gears matter?
I have a Carrera TDF I use for commuting, and after 6000 miles the chainrings are getting pretty worn. I have no idea which budget Shimano set they are.
My problem is, the only suitable replacement I can find (FC-2300) only has the 39T available, the 52T is sold out or discontinued everywhere.
So, would it work if I swapped the entire thing for this (http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/sp/road-track-bike/chainsets-chainsets-road-shimano-sora-double-3550-9-speed-chainset/shimchar491), which says its for nine speed bikes, while mine only has eight. If I swap it for this, will I need to replace various other bits and pieces like the derailleur/shifter?

That chainset is perfectly compatible wit all 7/8/9 drivetrains.
Besides that, you will also need a Shimano Hollowtech II BB , because your square taper axle cannot be used with the Sora chainset, which adds 15-20€ to the cost.(Unless it's included)
I think you have a 130 BCD right now and you should be able to find replacement chainrings for 35-40€
What brand is irrelevant , just 130 BCD.
So, unless you want the 34 for the hills, replacement of the rings only is cheaper.0 -
Ahh, great, thank you. It's starting to sound like a new chain set will be a bit more of a hassle!
I've been looking on the usual websites for 52T chainrings but all I've been able to find are either much smaller or are overkill/very expensive (£50+ for Ultegra). I might have to pop into the Evans next to the office next week.
If I just want to swap the outer chainring, do I need to take the entire chain set/BB off, or can I just swap the ring?0 -
If you crankset is a standard 130 BCD 5 arm double, something like this should fit, and yes you can swop the outer chain ring with the crank arm still attached to the BB, though it is more fiddly than if you were to remove it. http://www.evanscycles.com/products/sram/road-5-bolt-double-130mm-bcd-chainring-ec0456490
