Hi bought a Specialized Allez Elite which I find very comfy to ride looking to upgrade to a carbon bike over winter, was looking at a couple below, I am led to believe the first one will be a comfier ride, I do not plan on cycling any longer than 4 hours at a time any help in choosing would be greatly appreciated, I did notice the cheaper bike had higher spec gears but frame on more expensive one looks to be better,

Also how much difference would an S works frame make over standard Fact 9 or 10 ?

Forget about an S Works. For the substantial price hike over a standard frame you are not going tonotice the difference if you plan to just use it for casual rides.

A tarmac and an Allez share the same geometry so you would probably find this as comfortable as the Allez. The Venge is a very aggressive aero bike which will not be as comfortable to ride for long periods. Not saying it will be uncomfortable just not as. If you plan racing then maybe look at a venge if you intend sprinting. If you like hills then avoid it in favour of the Tarmac.

If you are going to get into the realms of asking "what is a good bike to get" then expect 50 different answers from 50 different people. If you really don't have an idea over something looked a good deal I honestly recommend you go to a bike shop snd sit on a few and get a test ride on something you like the look of. Only you can decide what you like or you may as well just go buy any old bike out there.

Never asked originally what a good bike was, I asked which of the two would suit my requirements, I liked both and was wondering how much difference in comfort from some experienced cyclists, I am relatively new so was looking for a little advice on both bikes I mentioned,

reply above said there was others out there, I never asked that so then I asked what he would recommend , i have tried a few not really near any major stockists last time 1 hour 15 to try a couple of bikes, many thanks Steve

I appreciatethat but if you ask anyone to recommend a bike then you are still only going to get what particularly suites them. If you are really after a bike thats good for you look online, find something you like the look of and search for a stockist. You could buy direct online from Canyon for example and take your chances but you asking a complete stranger what is a good bike out of the endless bikes available on the market is a bit silly. How much? How tall are you? Riding experience? Shimano ? Campagnolo? Carbon or Alu or other? Wheels - alu or carbon? Shallow or deep rims? Colour? Where do yourself start to begin answering your question?

Was really only asking what the different ride comfort from the two bikes I listed, whether or not the Venge was going to be comfortable or not for my requirements, or whether the Tarmac was more suited, had a few private PMs that have helped many thanks to them, STeve

I would just make list of what you want from a bike and compare the geometry to your existing bike. A tarmac and venge have lower front ends which maybe what you are looking for. Test rides help as you can see the bike and find out how it rides. You are right to try various makes of bike.

If your main consideration is ride comfort, look for a bike that will take at least 28mm tyres and also make sure you try out a few saddles to find out what suits you best.
  • For comfort with quick handling you might want to consider a bike form the Giant Defy or BMC Grand Fondo ranges,
  • I can personally recommend Canyons as being good value for money- I have 2 but these were bought as frames and were built up by my LBS but I hear some people have waited forever for a Canyon built bike.

I also have a new Bianchi Intenso which I love to look at but was more expensive than the Canyons and less well equipped. I suspect they are at their best leaning against the coffee shop wall.

If I was going to be clinical I would suggest a Giant TCR or propel. Giant's are rarely out of the top handful of "Bikes of the Year" and they have tremendous R&D facilities. If you want aero then propel or more conventionally the TCR. I would seriously recommend a look

If looking for a more comfortable Specialized carbon bike, just wondering why you are not considering a Roubaix, which I would think would be more comfortable than either the Tarmac or the Venge.

I think that you would be fine with the Tarmac which has the same geometry as your Allez. It would be interesting if you have an opportunity to try out a Roubaix which has a taller headset. But if you find the Allez a very good fit, the Tarmac should be ideal. The Venge looks great but I suspect it will be a real bone shaker and a bit too lively for comfort on descents.

There are loads of other brands out there but if you are constrained to this limited selection, you can't go wrong with the Tarmac - provided it is set up to match your Allez.

  • Just my opinion but buying Specialized is like buying vanilla ice cream. It's ok for what it is, but there are far more exciting flavours around if you just look.

Ended up looking at three a Giant TCR Pro1 2016, and the 2016 Specialized Tarmac Expert, ruled out the Venge maybe a mistake but time will tell, Bought the Specialized Tarmac Expert, (Vanilla Ice cream) as the deal on it was simply to good to refuse, would have got the Giant TCR Pro 1 but with the Specialized being hundreds cheaper than best price I could get on Pro 1, picked the Specialized

I'd imagine you'd have got a 2015 Giant for half the cost of a 2016 model and apart from the colour have noticed no difference at all on the road.

Got the 2016 Tarmac for very close to 2015 Giant price

Cheers will let you know how it goes when I manage to get out on it way weather is it might be a while
  • @smmjrr - I was faced with a similar(ish) choice. Was looking at Tarmac Comp 2015 vs TCR Advanced Pro 2 2015. Don't know if you test rode but I did and chose the Tarmac - great bike! Enjoy!

No test ride as weather was shocking, that was only downside, would have loved to try the Venge but had to decide without trying, not the best but deal was only available for 1 day, and just to good to turn down, my friend bought a 2015 Tarmac Expert at same time picking up both bikes on Tuesday,
