Workshop stand to lift rear wheel slightly
I've got a workshop stand that is a tripod with a cantilever arm and grip. It requires assembly and has a very large footprint each time I want to do any work on the bike, but it serves its purpose really well.
However, at other times all I need is for the rear wheel to be propped up off the ground by a couple of inches to allow me to rotate the pedals when I want to check the gear shifting, for example.
Can anyone recommend a simple, small stand that would serve this purpose? It would need to be very compact but keep the bike upright and secure.

I have one of those and it's not great tbh. You have to have the QR just right and you have to prise it apart quite a bit.
I'm tempted to replace it with one of these http://www.edinburghbicycle.com/products/revolution-tune-up-mini-workstand0 -
That Revolution stand looks like it would do the job. Thanks!0

If this is for a garage or shed just hang up a bit of rope from the rafters with a loop in the end. Tuck the nose of the saddle through the loop, adjust the length as required.. Might get a bit of a bollocking if you try this indoors though.Rose Xeon CDX 3100, Ultegra Di2 disc (nice weather)

These are suberb, I do all my maintanence on this and in fact built a bike using it.
I use shimano quick realease skewers and fit the stand perfectly, others don't fit perfectly.0 -
I use a broken turbo trainer for cleaning/simple jobs you have described - take the fan off, leave the frame, jobs a fish.
Folds up for storage, costs nothing when you find one as its a broken turbo.Postby team47b » Sun Jun 28, 2015 11:53 am

Topeak Flash Stand. Not secure enough for really substantial work, but ideal for gear setup and easily portable.

Thanks for the feedback, I've got a couple of spare rear Shimano skewers, and I would think it's fairly stable. Merry Christmas.0 -
So I got the Revolution stand from Edinburgh Cycles today and just set it up. It's this one here:

It's a very lightweight stand with two leg pieces and two hooks. Takes about 3 minutes to assemble - remember to locate the lug on the underside of the bolt head into the slot in the screwhole on the main pipe!
One hook is placed on the top hole and the other (longer) hook is placed on one of the lower holes depending on distance between the left-hand stays. There are no instructions supplied but there's a few pictures on the box on how to assemble it. Use the nuts for the hooks and the capped nuts for the bolts to secure the legs.
It's not particularly sturdy but does the job of raising the rear wheel for some basic jobs. It's a good price so reasonable value when you don't need a full workshop stand.0
