Looking for a CX bike that can handle steep climbs

I currently have a trek crossrip elite, and when I go up really steep grades I can hear a creaking noise coming from the frame. It's an aluminum frame, but I'm just wondering:
1. Is it typical for a CX bike to not do so well (i.e. have a noise coming from the frame) when going up steep grades (> 6%)?
2. If it's not typical, what would be some good CX bikes for going up steep grades?

Ability to climb on any bike is determined by a) gearing and b) fitness. Any creaking is probably down to maintenance - or lack of it.0

It's not a cross bike if it's not making noise from somewhere during a lap.My blog: http://www.roubaixcycling.cc (kit reviews and other musings)

I've done Rosedale Chimney on my cross bike with a 11-25 cassette. I have no idea if it was making any noise though as all I could hear was my wheezing and blood pumping in my ears.0
