I picked up a cheap Felt F95 frame and fork.
I was planning on fitting the claris group etc from a Carrera Virtuoso but it looks like the crankset is going to be a pain in the bum.

Sooo, looking to find a cheap option for crankset and BB to fit the felt that will be compatible with the claris stuff from the Carerra.
The Carerra has a Tourney front mech so I was thinking that the Tourney crankset might be the cheapest option:

The frame has a Shimano BBR60 bottom bracket fitted at the moment.

Can anyone tell me if the Tourney will be fine with the existing BB or a suitable one to purchase to go with it please?

Thanks in advance for any help.

No you can't use that Shimano Tourney square taper crankset with your Shimano BBR60 external HT II bottom bracket. You need a Shimano HT II crankset FC-6800, FC-5800, FC-4700/4600, FC-3550, if those are out of budget and you want to use the Tourney square taper crankset, you will need the matching BB-UN26 bottom bracket.

Just to add to DJ58's comments - there are other incarnations of the Ultegra (6800) and 105 (5800) that would also do the job and will probably be significantly cheaper such as 6700/6600/5700/4600 etc

There are also the non-series chainsets - I think they were numbered R500 or R565 or something close to that.

All of these will be compatible with your BBR60 bottom bracket and you may be able to pick one of them up on the classified section here on on Ebay for a good bit less than the 11-speed versions (6800/5800)
  • Thanks both.
With the cost of needing 2 tools to swap to a different bottom bracket it makes that option more expensive.

Picked up a Sora compact off ebay.

    Thanks for the help.

What Sora crankset did you buy, square taper of HT II, What BB tools do you have?

OK that Sora crankset is HT II so will fit the BB-BR60 BB that is already fitted to your frame. Make sure you grease the crankset axle spindle and the splines on the NDS before you fit the NDS crank arm. Do not over torque the bearing preload cap otherwise your BB will wear out prematurely.

BTW have you checked whether that Park Tool BB spanner fits the BB-BR60 cups? They are a smaller external diameter to those of the earlier model HT II BB cups.

Installation instructions can be found in document DM-FC0002-10-ENG.pdf form this page link http://si.shimano.com/#seriesList/20 under the heading FC-3550.

  • Thanks for all the help so far.
Your right, the tool is too big. I thought that would be the easy bit!

Is there one you can recommend or is there an adapter?

There is and adaptor available. Use TLFC37 or TLFC24 in conjunction with TLFC36 adaptor tool for installation and removal, these are genuine Shimano Tool part numbers http://si.shimano.com/#seriesList/47
Note the TL-FC24 is not shown on the tool list as I think it is a recent addition and the documentation needs updating.

This is the Park Tool http://www.parktool.com/product/bottom-bracket-tool-bbt-59?category=Crank & Bottom Bracket Note this is not an adaptor for you existing tool, you need a 3/8" square drive tommy bar or ratchet or torque wrench. Can't see and equivalent to the Shimano TL-FC24 on the Park website.
  • Not so long ago I would have given similar advice but recently I came across that there actually are 3 (not only 2) different Shimano thread-in outboard BB cup sizes (in respect of the outer diameter of the splined area). Which means figuring out the best tool is complex. Please see attached table for details (sorry for the split but this board is very restrictive regarding file attachments).

My advice to the non-frequent home user looking for the most versatile tool is: Purchase any of the tools (socket or wrench dependent on whether you'd like to use a torque tool or not) which are designed for the 44 mm cups AND are known to be compatible with the Shimano adaptors for the 41 or 39 mm cups. The most inexpensive one probably is the TL-FC32 (not a beauty but should do).
