Seems various idea about minimum of what is safe from 1mm to 0.7mm

Thinking i will replace if the get below 1.0mm

  • Do a search the consensus is you should replace rims when they reach 1mm or <1mm and 0.7mm is seriously dangerous.

The rim wall is usually thinner (due to uneven brake wear) below the area that can be measured with a caliper (ie in the boxed section) -so 1mm is about right.

Yeah, I think it bears to be cautious. A club friend had a spectacular blow out on a ride a few weeks ago which resulted in the dreaded call to a friend. Could have been a lot, lot worse.

Those sprung callipers are good but, as stated, it can be a bit tricky to get an accurate reading across the whole rim surface. Have a look at the wear though, see if you can feel the shallowest point with your thumb and then get a reading there. Anything less than a mm and it is time to get the wallet out...anything near to 0.7 and it is time to stop riding it!

    I don't even bother measuring.
Pump 1 bar or 15 PSI more then normal and you'll find out if a rim/tyre combination is fit for purpose.
