Garmin 25... REALLY?

I have received my Garmin 25 and, well, WTF?!
How on earth do you upload courses to it? The Garmin connect website is SHOCKING for trying to create courses, I'm trying to plan a route from Bristol to Exeter and it wants me to cycle along the A38, which I don't want to! You can't drag the route line to another road...
There must be a way of plotting a route on google maps and uploading it surely?!
Hope someone can help!

Have a look at the DC Rainmaker Review of the Garmin 25:

I have a Garmin 500 and the DC Rainmaker review of that was very good and answered any questions that I had.0 -
Plot the route on Strava's route builder (which is perfect for doing what you want and making a long distance route over unknown roads as you can give preference to the most popular roads and let strava do all the work) and then download the GPX and drag and drop the file in 'New Files' on your Garmin.0

Although the garmin website is awful you can drag your route around. It's clunky but it does work.0

If only this worked, don't think the 25 supports GPX filesCannondale CAADX Disc 2014 Tiagra - Blue

It is hard work though isn't it?! LOL
I kind of see now, at least the Garmin map does show cycle routes so you can more or less follow it, but you have to watch out as it will try to route you the most direct way even if that means main roads even if there are cycle paths near by!
I have now loaded up my 2 day weekend jaunt with the mrs, hope it doesn't let me down!!!Cannondale CAADX Disc 2014 Tiagra - Blue

I've got the Edge 200 but I presume it's the same as the 25. I just create the route in something like RidewithGPS then export the GPX file. I then manually copy the GPX file to the New_Files folder on the Garmin (when plugged in with USB) using Windows.
I only use Garmin Connect for synchronising the rides with Strava which has always worked automatically (touch wood) when the Garmin is plugged in.0 -

When I tried this the course did show up on the device but an 80 mile route showed as like 0.3km with no actual route, and that was converting it to a .fit file which is what the others were.
I'm sure I have read that the 25 doesn't do .gpx like it's predecessor does.Cannondale CAADX Disc 2014 Tiagra - Blue

Right, well, I'll be able to test it out tomorrow when I get off the train in Bristol and start cycling back to Exeter! At least it is waterproof!!
Where is everyone else riding this weekend??

You can use www.ridewithgps.com to create the course and move it to the 25 via USB can't you?0

Not sure if it is a premium only feature, but I download all my Starva routes as .tcx which is meant to work on the 500/510 (so fine on a 25 I guess).0 -
Send it back and get a 520
Its a fantastic little device, but I think you are asking way too much of it re mapping.0 -

I agree, I'm pretty impressed with the 520 so far (since switching from the 810).
OP, hope the ride goes ok tomorrow - make sure you have a waterproof jacket!
Looking at the forecast some armbands and a snorkel might also be useful0 -

I agree, just upgraded to the 520 from the 510 and using this site http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl will aid your route planningGiant Propel Advanced Pro 20 -
As said above, use the Strava route planner (it really is quite excellent) and download the file as .tcx. Copy this file to the New Files folder on your Garmin when it's plugged in to your computer via USB. It's really simple.0

How easy is it to install these maps on a 520 ? does cause any reliability issues?
and does it invalidate any warranty?0 -
The 25.
Other possible issue.
I haven't quite run the battery dry yet but gauging from the charge display after a 5 hour run, I am guessing at a realistic 6 hours maximum.
Just so you know. The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0 -

I can't really comment on the warranty but I have kept the original basemap it comes with and can always load it back on if need be.
It's a case of save the file into a folder where the base file already sits and renaming it to the original base name. I know the 520 is relatively new and garmins are known for being buggy but I've had no issues with itGiant Propel Advanced Pro 20 -

No, it doesn't cause any reliability issues and does not invalidate the warranty - if concerned you could just reinstall the original base maps should you have a warranty claim.

Sounds about right. Quoted as 8 hours.
The 25 is the entry level Garmin (for which it is fantastic) but If you are riding for more than 6 hours then you should not be looking at entry level IMO.0 -

Cheers, just downloaded Majorca and SW england, which i can use one at a time as and when, DC site gives easy to follow instructions0 -
Well, got back from my 165km weekend, Bristol - Exeter. The device was actually..... brilliant!
The breadcrumb trail navigation is really good, a couple of U turns and it doesn't redirect you if you miss a turn but, for the money it is great. Even if you go 'Off Course' it is pretty easy to pick it up again.
Battery isn't great, but lasts longer if you turn bluetooth off, just need to plot some routes for Christmas in Cornwall...Cannondale CAADX Disc 2014 Tiagra - Blue

Almost 6:00 on the button with phone connectivity switched off to save power.
Really, really glad I carried my 705 as back up for my Festive 500 big run.
It's a great wee unit, as long as you are aware of it's short comings. The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

The 705 is more than adequate for the other 5%.
