10 speed Shimano shifters and rear derailleur issues??

Should all Shimano 10 speed shifters and 10 speed rear derailleurs be compatible? I ask as this is what I've found.

I bought a 2016 Cinelli Zydeco, thought I'd add a crosser/disc to the fleet! First thing I've done is change the FSA chainset for a lighter Shimano model and with it came a Shimano 105 RD 5701 rear derailleur, the bike comes with a ten speed Tiagra 4700 unit and shifters so thought I'd fit the 105 mech, no matter what I do trying to fine tune the movement it always skips a gear either at the top of the cassette or the bottom as if the Tiagra shifters and 105 mech are not compatible even though they're both 10 speed!

I've refitted the Tiagra mech and it shifts lovely, just don't get it!

Any ideas?

Yes, all the 10 speed stuff used to play nicely, but the b@stards changed the pull ratio for Tiagra 4700.

ETA if you really wanted a 105 rear mech I think the 11 speed 5800 would work with your 4700 shifters.

I'd just stick with the new Tiagra and Ebay the 5700 mech unless you have another use for it

Thanks Keef that explains a lot, was only changing it for the sake of it really, the new 4700 rear mechs are quite a decent bit of kit compared to what they use to be so go into stick with it and flog the 105.

    Thanks again

i m not saying you are wrong but my daughter has 4700 10sp Tiagra shifters and a 5701 105 rear mech (replaced the tiagra one after a crash) and it shifts absolutely fine and has done for last 18months.

the cable clamp points are different on the 4700 and 5701, higher on 47 and lower on 57

Are you sure the tiagra shifters are the new 4700 with the concealed cables. They only released the groupset in March 2015 and it appeared in shops around July so can't see how it has been fitted for 18 months.
5700 will work fine with 4600 shifters.

It'll be the clamp of the cable in the RD.
    Checks it routed correctly
I had the very same issue and it drove me nuts trying to find the problem.

You sure you "had the very same issue"??

You were trying to pair a 105 5700 rear mech with the recently released Tiagra 4700 shifters and made them work together how??

I see your point as the clamp is quite a poor design however as long as it holds the cable in the same place at all times I don't think it would have made any difference.

Actually the fit and finish of the new Tiagra rear mech is on a par if not better than the 105 now I can compare the two.
