SRAM Type 2 rear mech issues

Hey there,
I've just installed a 1X setup on an old bike. It's a bit of a mish mash of parts, but i'm having a little issue with the SRAM X9 Type 2 rear mech. It's a second hand one that was given to me by a friend after an upgrade.
It's going up the cog (to the larger cogs) without problems, but seems to be slow or not go back down to a smaller cog. The cable tension is not the problem, and if I give the cable on the down tube a tug it "wakes" the mech up and it shifts down.
This is the first time i've used a clutch rear mech and was wondering if that was the problem? If not, does a spring need replacing?

Just sounds like a cruddy cable, the cable pulls it to the largest sprocket so if you pulling the cable helps it shift up the gears to the smaller sprocket the cable is sticking either in the shifter or first section of outer cable.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

What about Spring tension on the mech? Shimano is adjustable, Park Tools had info about setting up the return Spring pressure on SRAM mechs0

It does sound like that, but it isn't. Brand new cable and outers, and no resistance at all with the cables. It's definitely not the cable, I think it may be the spring tension in the mech. By yanking the cable, I think it gives it more of a jolt than the shifter. It's not as bad when you're riding as it is on the stand, but very far from smooth, I think I may bite the bullet and order a new mech.http://www.KOWONO.com - Design-Led home furniture and accessories.0 -
Just check how much play there is in the top pivot, when they get too much they display these symptoms.0
