Has anyone experience of this hardtail or dealings with Canyon in general?

A simple search will bring up lots of reviews of Canyon bikes and servicing, mostly very good, the CF 5.9 is a very good value bike.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

Before ordering, suggest you check out @canyonuk twitter feed. Lots of very disgruntled customers. Bikes are great - buying experience a nightmare. I cancelled my order.

As ever there will be those unhappy, they sell thousands of bikes a year and most people are very happy with them.

  • After a few emails back and forward I feel reasonably confident Canyon are getting back on track. Am gonna order the Grand Canyon CF 6.9, a lot of bike!

Great value, similar direct sales model to Canyon, the frames are generic though as they don't have the volume to have truly bespoke frames, competent enough though.

The Canyon 5.9 just edges the rose in a few areas (rear mech and brakes) although I'd prefer the Roses DT Swiss wheels to the Canyon's Crossrides, so there isn't really much in it.

Rose frames are bespoke. I read an interview with their lead designer recently.
I have ridden the Uncle Jimbo and Granite Chief and both were really excellent.

Some may be, some are quite definitely not!

There's a couple really nasty components in that Vitus, including the awful Formula hubs (new wheels to upgrade) and FSA press fit bottom bracket with Shimano adapter. A Shimano bottom bracket is only £15ish retail so I'm sure they could have fitted a proper one without too much extra cost.
  • New wheels for sure but the frame an componentry looks good .... No?

But new wheels would put i t over the price of the other two, it does have the best shifters and brakes though, so as long as you are happy paying slightly more once you've paid for the wheels then it's a decent buy.

  • If you are happy dropping over a grand on a new bike then to spend a few hundred more on a decent wheelset, then the Vitus could work very well. The Canyon looked OK, though I'd be wary of the delivery date being realistic given their current woes. You should ride one of these at least. Canyon unlikely, you may find a Vitus at a demo day, ROSE have a UK rep who can provide a demo.

@TheRookie - didn't get the generic not bespoke frame due to low volume? Wouldn't most bespoke frame builders be very low volume?

Bespoke means its genuinely their own frame, generic means they are using a large frame supplier (such as Merida) and a 'kit of bits' to build the frame up from, like the Carrera's for example, look at the dropouts closely and you'll see them on a number of Merida made bikes.

  • Ok, so bespoke by design rather than bespoke by frame build.

    Yes (sort of!).

Truly bespoke would be at tiny volumes such as the King of Mercia....

  • OK, been debating this one back an forth but think I am eventually gonna settle on this:

It seems a good bike for the money and there is nothing that I would need to change: good frame, forks, wheels, groupset. It is not available until early February so I think I will bide my time and keep hammering away on my 26er!
