Winter Layering Under Mid Weight LS Jersey

I'm looking for layering recommendations to ride(commute) at night at 0 to -6 degrees underneath this: http://images.zyro.co.uk/ImageGen.ashx?image=/productimages/AL26PNV/AL26PNV.jpg&width=400&compression=100&AltImage=/productimages/_noimage.png
I'm trying to reduce my apparel bulk in this temp range. I already have on order from their outlet store the Assos skinfoil for winter and winter+. Now i'm 132 pounds lighter in the wallet. I'm thinking about going with Gore Windstopper base layer, either ss or vest as the next to skin layer and skinfoil(winter or winter+ depending on temp) as a mid layer. FYI I went one size up on Altura NV Peleton Jersey(both colors). I went with my regular size on the skinfoil since they're somewhat 'stretchy'. And I'd go a size up on the Gore WS if I go this route.
Do you have any other recommendations on a next to skin baselayer? The only requirements is that it has to be thin and windproof. Oh...I will be riding at full speed hence the reason for the windproof baselayer.

I go with craft mesh with a zip neck merino long sleeve.
Can`t say I`ve seen a windproof base layer.Trek,,,, too cool for school ,, apparently0 -
Don;t bother with a windproof base layer. Use the Assos with that jacket/jersey then invest in a good quality Gilet to wear over the top. This will be more flexible, You can use the gilet all year round then0

You're exactly right, except...the reason I got the jerseys was for the 360 visibility and the way they looked. When I started jersey/jacket shopping, I was thinking along the same lines as you. But in the final analysis, I figured it would be more versatile investing more in great base layers and invest less on the top(s). The Gore WS base layer is a little different than other base layers, so the moisture isn't trapped between skin and WS layer. http://redkiteprayer.com/2013/02/gore-windstopper-base-layer/ FYI I do have a DHB Flashlight thermal gilet if need be.0 -
I can't help thinking you are going about this back to front. The Skinfoils are expensive, quality items designed to be worn as a first layer. seems odd to spend such a lot of money on them and use them outside their design parameters.
my choice would be skinfoil, then the jacket with windproof outer layer. If you wear two heavy baselayers, you'll end up feeling like the michelin man I would have thought.0 -
Would agree with above comments. Only real application I can think of for a windproof baselayer is winter racing, 'cross, etc, where you might want to wear a skinsuit and not obscure club logos etc. Windproof barrier is best worn as an outer layer, where it can be removed, or vented far easier.0

Yes - arse about face here. If its minus 6 you dont want a midweight jersey.
Its night time you say - so you want shedloads of reflectives - fluo doesnt help much.
You'd be better off going to Aldi and getting one of their £20 jackets - very warm and they're not race cut so you can put a couple of layers underneath. A mid weight jersey isnt going to cut it at -6.0 -
Ok, I give up. Majority rules. Ixnay the Gore WS base layer. There's plenty time in spring, fall, early winter when I can have my way with my Altura jerseys with a merino or skinfoil layer underneath. Thanks to all for your input.0

Absolutely superb bit of kit.0 -
Don't like windproof underlayers - they simply don't breathe enough and leave you clammy and cold if you stop. Fine for racing in a skinsuit on a cold day, but not for 3hrs+ in winter. A windproof gilet and far more adaptable and if you get too hot, stuff it in your pocket - harder to strip-off a baselayer.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0

I use a gore windproof base layer if it gets very cold, as well as other layers. It works well for me compared to a normal base layer. I would do a test ride to get your layering right as you can't remove a base layer midride. Also shop around for best deal.0

I recently bought the Craft Active Extreme baselayer which just has the front panel as a Gore windstopper. The fact that the rest of the top (arms and back) can breathe and wick moisture means that it doesn't seem to get too sweaty. Only tried it a few times but it does appear to be a good option on days where the wind is cold, although I accept it doesn't offer the convenience/options of a windproof gilet.0
