Winter tyres?

I have two bikes.
One takes 700 x 42 tyres and the other 700 x 35.
I'm looking for a winter tyre that will fit both bikes depending on which one I want to go out on.
Living in the frozen north (Aberdeen) what do people suggest for a tyre? Not sure I need anything with spikes as I doubt I'll be cycling on compacted snow or ice, but who knows.

When you say "One takes 700 x 42 tyres and the other 700 x 35", do you mean that is what they are currently fitted with and that you require 1 pair of tyres in a 42 and another pair in a 35? Or are you looking for a I pair of tyres that can be fitted to either bike?Rose Xeon CDX 3100, Ultegra Di2 disc (nice weather)
Ribble Gran Fondo, Campagnolo Centaur (winter bike)
Van Raam 'O' Pair
Land Rover (really nasty weather )0 -

Yep, that's what was fitted (and still is) when I bought the bikes.
I'm looking for a pair that I can fit to either bike.
I have seen something on the internet somewhere that states the min and max tyre sizes than can be fitted to a rim but I can't find it anymore...0 -
Do both bikes have the same hub setups? i.e Quick release skewers?
Have you tried fitting the wheels with the wider tyres onto the other bike - are the forks and frame wide enough to cope? Easiest route would be to have one set of wheels with your preferred winter tyre and to swap them between bikes.
What are you going to be riding? Road, canal paths, bridleways?0 -

Unfortunately not, one is quick release the other a good old fashioned nut.
Also, one has disc brakes, the other rim brakes.
One is 11 speed, the other 7.
Hence why I'm looking for a tyre to do both. Given how expensive winter tyres seem to be I'd prefer just to buy one pair and take 20 mins to swap the tyre from rims to rims.
I'll be riding on roads, maybe a dual use foot and cycle path which won't likely be treated with salt/grit.0 -

Budget?
Not sure, no more than £50 per tyre...0 -
Swapping the tyres every time you want to ride a different bike seems a lot of hassle, especially in the wet and cold at this time of year.0

The bikes are stored in my flat. And I'm thinking of just buying one tyre for rear wheel...0 -

Good luck with changing wet and muddy tyres in your flat.0 -

Yes, but after thinking about it I decided to maybe just buy one.
I have no choice in where I store my bikes. Too many people in the building have bikes and the Housing Association put a stop to bikes being stored on the ground floor hallway citing health and safety issues. We asked them to provide storage in the rear garden and they said no. We asked if we could erect our own shed in the rear garden and that we would take all responsibility for it. They said no. It's a whole saga and we have got our local MP involved who has also approached the Fire Brigade for their assistance.0 -
Now that I've had mudguards fitted to the bike with 35 wide tyres there isn't any clearance for wider tyres. Will a 35 fit on the rim of the bike fitted with 42's?0
