I am quite interested in maybe changing my present bike computer to the Garmin 1000 but reviews and write ups seem a bit vague on whether or not it links in with strava. Can any users advise me on this? After a ride will the 1000 upload/link with strava, my fitness pal or other such apps?

    Yes it does

  • Yes - I'm a bit ambivalent about the 1000 - it's a bit of a mess still. Here's a couple of examples:

    1. Segments. It used to be that Garmin's own segments only worked if you were running a course. Now it has Strava segments, the segments WON'T work if you're running a course  You still need to have chosen the segments (really, therefore, have ridden them) for them to work on the device. It also gets a bit confused about which direction you're going so flags the beginning of a segment that might be going in the other direction.
    2. I want FE-C, like exists on the 520, so I can use the Garmin to run my Tacx. It's due to be launched on 1000 firmware and has been promised for a while but where is it?

It's all typically Garmin - stuff kinda works most of the time but also often doesn't work properly.

Yes it does link. Although i do get problems sometimes getting pc to recognise it. Usually re-inserting the cable again works. I was thinking the wireless upload feature would be easier though.
  • I recently upgraded from a Garmin 810 to a Garmin 1000.
For me it has been faultless. I love the wireless syncing with Strava. I arrive home and press the end ride button whilst I am outside the front door. By the time I have opened the door and taken the bike inside my ride is already on Garmin Connect and Strava and Training Peaks without me doing anything. So much better than the bluetooth or cable options that I had lots of problems with.

I have several bikes and a Wattbike and it copes really well with the myriad of power meters and other sensors. I love the way it just works out which one you are using, as opposed to the bike profile approach on the 800 series.

    ^ This.

Loved it so much I upgraded Garmin watch to Fenix 2, and commute/off road Garmin to Edge 25.
Great when you are abroad or cannot connect to a computer for any reason too.

Both of these are amazing little devices, and they seem less prone to hissy fits than the more complicated 1000.

Garmins are not perfect, but I have no regrets about any of the 7 we have owned over the years.
I oddly accept and forgive them their flaws. Bit like a naughty but much loved pet.

The 1000 has been very good for me. I still however think there are gaps (as per above) the Ant plus FEC thing is very useful for connected trainers. The Strava segments bit is for choppers really, in my view. I agree about the Garmin course segments bit and why they did it, then pulled the plug, I guess it was down to users not utilising garmins buggy web software. Strava is many things but its definitely nowhere near as buggy as Garmin connect.

Its survived Flanders, Liege and numerous long audax rides, the only real weakness is the battery life, which can be remedied by having a USB micro connector and a mini battery pack. You’d then get 20 plus hours, which is more than enough! Usually with my usual power profile, it measures fine for around 10-12 hours, if I were out on the road for that long. For a testing 5-8 hour group ride its perfect. have Bluetooth powered off and the screen dimmed, for daylight rides, you’ll still be able to use it just fine.

The course issue is fair enough though personally I find the live segment feature something I only want on my commute anyway and I don't need a course for that! I think you can get unridden segments by searching for them but can't quite see why you would want a live segment for a segment you haven't yet ridden anyway. And you surely wouldn't want to not choose the segments yourself. As for the direction issue - unless you are on a course, the GPS doesn't know where you are going next. Maybe you want to turn around and do the segment in the other direction. it's not confused - it's just telling you what is nearby. No difference to a segment off a side turning that you are not planning on going down.

Would be good if you could reduce the lead in time to a segment though (not that I've tried to see if it can be done). I don't need 400ft plus warning of an approaching segment on my daily commute! I suspect more configurability will come.

Looking at pulling the trigger myself but surely worth hanging on for Dec/Jan sales/offers ?
Best price I can find for performance bundle is from Handtec at just under £300 - that doesn't include an out front mount I notice that comes with some other of bundles from different providers i.e Wiggle etc...
  • If your a strava whore. The 1000 is probably best.

Me? Not interested in segments or racing on my commute so I keep the 800.

The Garmin Edge 1000 Performance Bundle is well worth it if you can get a good deal. I managed to get a price match a couple of months ago at £342. I guess you should be able to get a lower price than that now.

The Performance Bundle should come with:

    - Outfrount mount
    - Premium heart-rate monitor chest strap
    - New cadence sensor (uses accelerometer rather than magnets)
    - New speed sensor (ditto)
