Tried to use Zwift when on turbo but not working

I tried to do a free trial on Zwift today when on the Turbo, but I couldn't get it working.
I was on an Elite Crono Fluid turbo, using a Garmin Edge 500 with a speed/cadence sensor and a Heart Rate monitor and had downloaded and logged on to Zwift on my laptop, which has a decent spec running on Windows 8.1.
However Zwift couldn't contact to my speed/cadence sensor - any idea why?

Thanks for the advice but did you really need to start your reply with "Wha?!"
Anyway I guess I should be buying something like this:

or are there any cheaper options you would recommend?0 -
I use that one, it does the job fine, cheaper on amazon. Regardless of what you go for, using a USB extension cable to move the ANT+ stick closer to the sensors seems to get the best results for the majority of zwift users.0

I use one of these for trainer road. Same principle I believe.

It seems to have a good range. I have it on a chair in about a metre front of bike and it picks up speed sensor on rear wheel with no problems.0 -
I use the Tacx Vortex with the Garmin ANT+ dongle listed above.
You can also get these cheaper ones from Amazon for £9:
www.amazon.co.uk/Anself-Compatible-Garmin-Forerunner-011-02209-00/dp/B00LIIMHP4/

I realised my trainer wasn't adjusting the resistance automatically after a few days...the problem was that Zwift was picking up the Bluetooth channel and not the ANT+ for the power trainer.0 -
The suunto one is great. Before I had a desktop and took my laptop to the garage you never needed to take it out. Unlike the Garmin ones, broke two of them. Well, the kids did.Insta: ATEnduranceCoaching

I read somewhere that the really cheap ones are unreliable. The Garmin USB Ant sticks seem to be a good option but they are a bit expensive. Maybe the Suunto would be a good option.
Whatever one I get, how near does the laptop need to be to the speed sensor on the bike?0 -

The suunto one is great. My Powertap rear hub was about 2metres from the dongle and had no issues.Insta: ATEnduranceCoaching

Don't know. Don't think so. It's not a feature I use on my 810 anyway, I upload to particular training software by a wired connection.
Although using tapiirik you can link it all anyway.Insta: ATEnduranceCoaching

+1 for the cheaper amazon ones. Works perfectly fine with Zwift and TrainerRoad. I wouldn't pay more than a tenner.
I have the edge 500 too, and the ride records to that as you would when outside, however if using Zwift or TrainerRoad, they are capable of uploading rides to strava without ever using the edge 500.
So I don't use my edge 500 any more as all the data is on the computer screen and uploads to strava.0 -
You need a version 2 Ant+ stick. The older Garmin sticks are V1 and don't work with Zwift. The newer small dongle is the one that works.0
