Needing some new long mudguards for my current Roubaix Disc, as the SKS Raceblades I have, bought for previous Caliper versioned bike, wont be any good.

Local Spesh dealer says the Spec 'Plug & Play' fenders are best perhaps, but stock is sold out in UK, and not perhaps available till mid Jan !
That said, I've looked at fitting instructions, and not sure my Roubaix has said Plug & Play fitments ?
Anyone know ? Think they are aimed at the Diverge specifically......

Or - can anyone suggest good mudguards that will fit a disc braked bike shod with 28c tyres ?
Thx

  • I've just gone through the same dilemma, with varying degrees of success (I have a Roubaix SL4 disc). I looked at the Plug-and-play, but had been told they weren't very good. I also went for full SKS Chromoplastics, but had problems fixing them to the rear seatstay bridge. The rear ended up in a bin mid-ride after the removable screw/thread thingummy sheared off leaving one of the stays rattling about in mid air.

I settled on the new SKS raceblade longs, as recommended by the Spesh Concept store in Harrogate. The only problem you will have is fitting the attachments to the front fork and seatstay bridge, especially the latter, as these guards are really meant for bikes with caliper brakes (so the assumption being you will have the bolts to attach the guards to the frame already). In their wisdom, Specialised made the frame-facing thread one sided, so therefore a screw/bolt is needed that is not only the right width, but also short enough to 'bury' itself fully in the thread without lots of thread still showing. For me it was a botch job - I actually used a screw from MTB cleats which happened to fit, albeit with a washer to make sure it tightened enough. You'll also need an appropriate screw/bolt for the front forks as well, but I had one left over from another aborted attempt with full mudguards (see above!).

In the end they were secured well enough, and have withstood the rigours of my commute a few times. The ability to move the guards further away from the tyres means you might be able to get away with 28mm tyres (I have 25's - and proper 25's, not the Specialized tyres that came on the bike that claimed they were 25mm and measured more like 28!). The only other bother I had was with the small extension for the rear guard, which rattled against the seat post until I put a Velcro sticker on both, which has secured it to the seatpost fine enough.

Sorry, but I seem to have recommended something then set about highlighting the flaws with them! In summary then, with a certain amount of fettling and botching, these work fine, and much better coverage than the shorter raceblades. Having said all that, I think there is a new version of the raceblades due out sometime (might be Jan 16), that now have adjustable stays, which might adjust to be compatible with the 'Zertz' inserts: http://www.sks-germany.com/en/products/raceblade-pro-black-2/
I might have a look at them when they hit these shores - might save a lot of faff if the Raceblade Longs don't work out in the long run.

Thx for the info - comprehensive, & sounds like a task !

I spoke with Spesh UK & they recommended fitting some small fixings into the small holes in the seat stays & forks, which then enables 'any' fenders to be fitted.
They said they'd had great success with some Blackburn guards, and would happily fit them for me.
    So - that's the plan..…

I'll report back when sorted !

Not sure what is meant by 'small fixings', but if it the ones in the third photograph under section about the Roubaix SL4 disc in this article, then this is the thing that sheared off on mine (they were already on my bike when new):

I had to buy another set of four from a shop (can't remember which one, but not a Specialized Concept store, although they did refer me to it).
