Spoke Query

I'm building a new 28 spoke rear wheel and have calculated the spoke lengths required to be 290mm using 12mm nipples. When I tried to order the spokes I was told they were out of stock but was offered 289mm spokes with 16mm nipples.

I've never considered this before and wondered if it was a valid workaround or would the wheel be compromised at all?

LOL! I guess it depends on whom they are on.

If the spoke are Sapim then spoke length is not changed by using longer nipples. With dt swiss spoke nipples the spoke length is altered by the length of nipples due to the differing thread depth in the nipples.

So your workaround is only valid for nipples that are not made by Sapim.

They are DT Swiss Competition (black finish) with black brass nipples. They are actually being supplied free of charge under warranty but I think I'll wait for the 290mm spokes with 12mm nipples.

Thanks for the help and advice.
