Cassette Compatibility

Have decided to upgrade my winter bike to Shimano 105 11 speed.
Originally the bike, a Specialized Allez was fitted with 9 speed Sora which I upgraded to 10 speed Tiagra.
This required me to remove the spacer from the rear wheel freewheel to fit the new 10 speed cassette.
Am I correct in thinking that as 11 speed has a narrow chain than 10 speed the sprockets on an 11 speed cassette are also narrower than 10 speed and as such an 11 speed cassette is overall the same width as a 10 speed cassette and will therefore fit my original wheels.
Any help much appreciated.

When your freewheel body is still a 10 speed one, a 11 speed cassette will not fit, as the 11 speed one is wider.
The rear hub determines the compatibility.
A narrow cassette can always be spacered to a wide body but the other way around usually not.
BTW, a Shimano 10 speed cassette is actually narrower than a 9 speed one, so your first observation looks not correct to me.0 -
a 8/9/10 only FH is 35mm in depth, from the cassette stop to the very end of the thread, so if yours is 1.85mm deeper your good to go, if not as keezx has said, no.
however depending on the wheel, you might be able to buy a new 11sp FH.0 -
Thanks Keezx, seems as though my recollection of changing from 9 speed to 10 speed is incorrect in that I must have ADDED the spacer prior to fitting the 10 speed cassette, if this is the case hopefully removing the spacer might allow me to fit the 11 speed cassette on this freewheel hub.
Looks like as Mamba80 is suggesting a bit of trial and error and some measuring is required.0 -

you might be in luck, a tiagra 10sp cass has the spacer built in unlike most shimano 10sp cassettes, so if you still needed a spacer.... happy days!0 -
The Shimano 11s MTB cassettes (11-40 or 11-42) will fit on a 9/10s cassette body, as the large cog is big enough to allow the cogs to sit closer to the spokes without having the derailleur hitting the spokes in bottom gear. Other 11s cassettes require the wider 11s cassette body.0

Won't you need to change the brake lever and rear derailleur?
Just out of interest, I too have a 9 speed Specialized Allez and looking at changing the rear cassette. I was looking at fitting a 28T or 30T cassette but it appears the entire groupset would need to be upgraded.
I think I can get a 27T cassette to work but would there be much noticeable difference between 25T and 27T ?"The Prince of Wales is now the King of France" - Calton Kirby0 -
An 11s cassette won't fit on a 9/10s freehub.
You can however fit an 11s cassette on a 9/10s hub if you drop one of the sprockets, 16 I think, and adjust the rear derailleur accordingly. Lots of info on this online. You can however pick up 11s wheels cheap enough these days, less than £100.
Which wheels do you have? If they're Mavic then they'll be 11s ready.0 -
